Book of Daniel - Counter fundie call for boycott
I don't really watch much TV - and don't know if this show is any good or not - but I DO know that the fundies have their panties in a bunch over it - so I reckon it's "pretty good" LOL . . .

The AFA is calling for a major campaign against this show to get NBC - or local affiliates - to pull it. So it needs countering. Here is their blurb:

*****

"Terre Haute, Indiana, NBC affiliate WTWO has become the first station
to announce that it will not carry the anti-Christian program The Book of
Daniel. We urge you to <http://www.nbc.com/nbc/header/Local_Stations> call
your local NBC affiliate and ask them to join WTWO in not carrying the
program. Please call today and ask others to call. The phone calls do make a
difference! < <http://www.nbc.com/nbc/header/Local_Stations>[br />http://www.nbc.com/nbc/header/Local_Stations ]

<http://www.afa.net/bookofdaniel_review.asp> Click Here to read a review
of the show by AFA's Ed Vitagliano, who has viewed the entire premiere episode
of NBC's The Book of Daniel.

AFA has also learned that NBC is having trouble securing sponsors for the
program. It appears that NBC will be forced to fill the available ad spots
with "distressed merchandise" ads which are sold at pennies on the dollar
of the going rate, and with "make good" ads which bring in no money to the
network.

Please call local companies which advertise on your NBC affiliate and ask
the local advertisers in a nice way to cancel their advertising on the local
affiliate if it carries the program.

It is time to make our voice heard at NBC that we will not long remain
silent about their anti-Christian bigotry. Here is what NBC considers to be
a positive portrayal of Christians and Christianity:

The program's main characters include Daniel Webster, a drug-addicted
Episcopal priest; his alcoholic wife; his son, a 23-year-old homosexual
Republican; his daughter, a 16-year-old drug dealer; a 16-year-old adopted
son who is having sex with the bishop's daughter; his lesbian secretary who
is sleeping with his sister-in-law; and a very unconventional white-robed,
bearded Jesus who talks to the priest.

It is written by Jack Kenny, a practicing homosexual who describes himself
as being "in Catholic recovery," and is interested in Buddhist teachings
about reincarnation and isn't sure exactly how he defines God and/or Jesus.
"I don't necessarily know that all the myth surrounding him (Jesus) is
true," he said.

Finally, join nearly 500,000 individuals who have already emailed NBC about
their anti-Christian bigotry.

I do NOT want the fundies dictating what's on the tube. Funny how they all watch Desperate Housewives, though. Hypocritical morans.

1. and yet Touched by an Angel was okay
thank god they weren't sportin' any queers in the story line -

Who the hell are these morons? Oh yeah, same ones who were issuing death threats to the theatres when Last Temptation of Christ came out and whenever Jesus gets in the boxing ring in Southpark.

What a bunch of ugly little people. Why don't all fourteen of them go hole up in a compound in Texas or something . . .

2. Actually the premiere was quite good. I hadn't expected that.
It started out a little over-the-top, but I guess they had to cram a lot of exposition in because there will be complicated storylines. After a while, it settled down and there were some hilarious lines in the script. Better-written than I expected. Very wry. Once it found its rhythm, it felt like a cross between Desperate Housewives and Six Feet Under. Now, I never took to Desperate Housewives for some reason, but this show I could see myself watching. Aidan Quinn does a nice job and I never much cared for him before.

I don't understand the fuss the fundies are making. But then I don't understand the fundies. I think their objections are just knee-jerk ones, like How Dare They Show a Homosexual As a Real Person? or something. It's manufactured outrage, and its ridiculous.

3. I think it's more like
How Dare They Show a MINISTER as a REAL PERSON?

Cracks, sin, and all.

Well, and the whole gay thing, too.

4. Don't counter it - point out to anybody who enjoys the show
that the Religious Reich was the one who pulled the show (sight unseen) from the airwaves - despite the fact that "Jesus" was tangible and real to the main character . . . only because they dared show a gay character as anything more than an absolutely stereotypical "flaming homo" . . .

5. This Christian loved it.
Their portrayal of Jesus was very moving to me, and very genuine; I cringe to think what kind of Jesus these protesting fundies would put in his place. Their Jesus would probably show up talking to everyone, just as they were committing a "sin," and condemn them in his best "King James" voice. :scared:

My very conservative parents, who buy into all that right-wing religious stuff, watched part of it, just to see what all the hype was about. And even they said they didn't find it nearly as upseting or controversial as they thought it would be. Almost sounded disappointed that they weren't offended.

6. That's one of the things that ticks me off
people condemning it WITHOUT ever even having SEEN IT!
