The Hill: Dems say McKinney a distraction; she and Pelosi do not speak
McKinney is distraction, say the Dems
By Josephine Hearn

The bizarre scuffle Wednesday between Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-Ga.) and an unnamed U.S. Capitol Police officer is winning the spirited congresswoman few new friends in her caucus. In fact, some Democrats are trying to distance themselves from her.

McKinney has been aggressively publicizing the incident, calling press conferences on each of the past two business days and even attracting a mention on the front page of The New York Times, something that the dozens of House and Senate Democrats combined couldn’t match when they unveiled their homeland-security plan last week....

***

All of the attention has some Democrats concerned that McKinney is drawing the limelight away from their policy goals and Republicans’ ethical missteps to focus on a momentary, disputed encounter in a Capitol Hill hallway....

***

McKinney often elicits strong opinions, even within her own caucus. She has a history of making controversial statements that delight progressives while irking moderates, yet even some of the caucus’s more progressive members have had disagreements with her.

She and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) no longer speak, not even to exchange greetings when encountering each other in the Capitol hallways, said two House Democratic sources....At her news conference Friday, organizers originally expected to have members of Congress join McKinney in a show of support. None ultimately appeared, although Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) sent a statement saying that “the most responsible and useful course for all involved would be to seek a resolution that would be satisfactory to both parties.”...

1. She keeps getting elected
snip>
At BBC Television, we had Florida's computer files and documents, marked 'confidential' -- stone-cold evidence showing how the vote fix was deliberately crafted by Republican officials. Not a single major U.S. paper asked for the documents not from the state of Florida nor from the BBC. Only one U.S. Congressperson asked for the evidence and made it public: Cynthia McKinney of Atlanta.
snip>
After George Bush Senior left the White House, he became an advisor and lobbyist for a Canadian gold-mining company, Barrick Gold. Hey, a guy's got to work. But there were a couple of questions about Barrick, to say the least. For example, was Barrick's Congo gold mine funding both sides of a civil war and perpetuating that bloody conflict? Only one Congressperson demanded hearings on the matter.

You've guessed: Cynthia McKinney.

2. Fuck those "Dems"...
Their wussy lack of backbone and principle is a fucking distraction. Bastards - refuse to even support one of their own. Or maybe they don't consider her one of their own....

6. This whole episode is stupid
If they would all just shut up aboout it, it would go away. She acted like a little kid with a temper tantrum. Instead of politely apologizing in private or simply moving on with her life, she goes and publicizes it? She says it's racial profiling?

Give me a break. She wasn't wearing her ID lapel and she blames an officer for doing his/her job?

She looks like an idiot with these accusatory statements. She hit a cop with her cell phone... What in the world is the matter with this lady? Just let it die and stop hitting people with cell phones for doing their jobs.

I may agree with her politics but I certainly am disgusted by her handling of this situation.

10. Sounds like you believe the cop
and we all know that cops never lie. Not even some certain Arkansas State troopers or my personal favorites the LAPD.
Don't be fooled, this is a setup from the word go and yes, racial profiling does exist.
And grabbing someone from behind is not doing their job, he could have stepped in front of her easily.

16. Come on
believe the cop? There were witnesses. It's probably all on video tape. Not everything is a conspiracy. She acted like a little kid, and then went tried to smear the cop as being a racist. That is unacceptable. SHe wasn't wearing her ID.. PERIOD! Have you heard her comment on that? No, because she is avoiding it. That's the whole situation.

No ID, no stop, hit officer when stopped, play the race card, no humility.

5. By whose judgment?
She was target by AIPAC before and was defeated. But I'll bet that wont happen again! Democrats have no spine and are always running away from anyone who has dared to stand up on any controversial issues. I am not too surprised about Dems shunning her, but she has my support!

9. More likely
It has nothing to do with her politics at all. I would guess that a congress critter wouldn't want to go anywhere near someone using a racial profiling defense after hitting a police officer who is charged with protecting lawmakers with a cellphone. It was a stupid thing to do, and she's hanging out to dry for it. She wasn't wearing her ID, the cop asked her for ID and to go through the metal detector, she refused, he pursued, she turned around and whacked him with a cell phone. Simple enough. She's acted like an idiot.

13. Where did it say that she was asked to go through the metal detector?
Show me the quote or are you making up stories to suit your agenda?
Just come out and say that you hate her. I know you want to.

19. You are a strange person
Why do you suppose I "hate her"? Go ahead and act like a jerk. Explain to me how you know I hate someone I never met. Explain how you know this from 2 posts, and never havng met me in your life.

"The six-term congresswoman is said to have hit a Capitol Police officer in the chest earlier this week when he stopped her from entering the building without going through a metal detector. McKinney said she was not wearing a lapel pin identifying her as a House member, but that she did display her Congressional identification badge."

http://www.11alive.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=78068

The tape, the official said, only shows McKinney walking around the security checkpoint, which members of Congress are allowed to do. It does not show her confrontation with the officer who, not recognizing McKinney as a member of Congress, tried to stop her and have her go through the metal detector. McKinney acknowledged that she was not wearing the special lapel pin given to the 435 House members to make them easier to identify.

17. I think it says something
that the Congressional Black Caucus hasn't stepped up in support of McKinney. I'm not sure why they haven't, but I have great respect for many of the members of the caucus. I'm don't think of people like Jackson Lee and John Conyers as stupid.

14. Should McKinney just let the freepers control the situation, then?
Regardless of the situation, McKinney has the right to defend herself in the press. Why shouldn't she go on the offensive, instead of just reacting passively like certain other Democrats.

21. It FIGURES that the DLC had their fingers in her race From your last link.

Why am I not surprised? Bastards.

<snip>A shell of a party

Georgia Democrats did the rest of the damage to themselves, by embracing the Bill Clinton/Democratic Leadership Council (DLC) brand of dollar-politics. This fatal, corporate-financed strategy encouraged white and Black Democrats to adopt watered down Republican positions in an ever-rightward search for white “swing” voters. Flush with cash, former Democratic Governor Roy Barnes outspent his Republican opponent four- or five-fold in 2002 – but lost. Without a progressive message, Barnes could not mobilize the Democratic Party’s base constituencies.

The statewide party remains moribund. With only four months left before the primaries, Democrats were unable to recruit a viable candidate for the Senate seat being vacated by the apostate Democrat, Zell Miller. Into the void walked Miller’s longtime political ally, Majette.

Like her fellow DLCers, Majette has no progressive message. Her only rallying cry to black Democrats in the general election will be that the other guy is still worse. On the other hand, the DLC’s friends in the corporate media will be delighted to sell Majette to whites as a certifiable “moderate" who had the “courage” to stand against McKinney and the Black Consensus; someone for whom they can safely vote and know that they are not racists after all. They will try to market Majette to black voters any way they can: as a Great Black Hope – or the only Black Hope – and as proof of their discredited thesis that black voters are aching to discover their inner conservatism.
