Jill Carroll Disavows Prior Statements
I can't say I'm surprised by this. I had a couple of interesting exchanges with DUers about whether or not her original statements were an accurate reflection of her experience. I suspect that she had a harrowing time of it.

By MATT MOORE, Associated Press Writer

Protected by the U.S. military and far from the country where she had been held hostage, Jill Carroll strongly disavowed statements she had made during captivity in Iraq and shortly after her release, saying Saturday she had been repeatedly threatened.

In a video, recorded before she was freed and posted by her captors on an Islamist Web site, Carroll spoke out against the U.S. military presence. But in a statement Saturday, she said the recording was made under threat. Her editor has said three men were pointing guns at her at the time.

"During my last night in captivity, my captors forced me to participate in a propaganda video. They told me I would be released if I cooperated. I was living in a threatening environment, under their control, and wanted to go home alive. So I agreed," she said in a statement read by her editor in Boston.

"Things that I was forced to say while captive are now being taken by some as an accurate reflection of my personal views. They are not."

1. Can't say I wouldn't do the same thing ....
... guns pointed at me or not.

It is wise to wait 'til "captives" have made it home to hear what they have to say (I realize this is your point).

3. I wonder how those smucks feel who smeared her the past two days?
Imus was one of them.

Then I also wonder if she were threatened by the US considering the harrassment she suffered right after her interviews. she looked pretty healthy all things considered, even as though she gained some weight. I really hope she wasn't assaulted in any way and I wish her peace.

5. my guess is that he'll spew some line of bullshit
about how she shouldn't have knuckled under and taped a "confession" that smeared the US or something else equally repugnant. :eyes:

14. No, more likely he'll
continue to cast aspersions on her by hinting that she was complicit in some way. He is revolting.

4. I thought this was the case, that Ms. Carroll was being forced to

say the things she said. I saw a psychiatrist on MSNBC or CNN yesterday, talking about the Stockholm Syndrome in regard to Ms. Carroll. I didn't really buy it in her case, and now it turns out she was suffering from the Machine Gun Syndrome -- say what you're told, or get shot to death. I don't blame her a bit. I know I would do the same thing, if I had even the faintest glimmer of hope that it would get me out of that situation.

Thanks for posting this, cali.

On edit: Recommended.

7. Well put, Seattle Girl.
Machine Gun Syndrome, exactly right. I never bought the Stockholm Syndrome stuff either. I can't say I buy the idea that she was threatened by representatives of the US either, as one poster has suggested. Occam's razor suggests that she is simply telling the truth, now that she's at liberty to do so. I'm so glad she's safe and soon to be reunited with her family. I wish her a speedy recovery from all she's endured.

8. I'm with you. I'd denounce me own Mum if that's what it took to get
out alive. If anyone (I'm talking about civilians) thinks they'd behave differently, I hope they are never in the position to find out.

6. I wonder if she'll ever get an apology?
After all those nasty things that were said about her? Anyone want to take a bet that we won't hear anything approching "I'm sorry" from those assholes?

10. That fact that she was wearing a burqa should have
given people a clue that she was not free to do or say what she pleased. I would have done exactly the same. She is a reporter and is not bound to only give name rank and serial number. :eyes:

15. The Morans that saw the burka immediately assumed she was
sympathetic to her kidnappers' cause.

Could never accuse anyone on the right of being deep thinkers!

13. Being a Republican means never having to say you're sorry.
I'm so tired of this armchair bravado crap.

I'll bet even Imus would have shit his pants if he was kidnapped like Carroll was. These people are big talkers ... that's all they are, ASSHOLE talkers. They know nothing.

As Malloy pointed out last night, Republicans LOVE to attack women because they are contemptible cowards. And true to their cowardice, they will never apologize.

18. years ago, I read something that seems quite pertinent now. it stated
that whenever anyone was taken captive or hostage or became a POW, that they should go ahead and say whatever the captors wanted, and nothing would be held against them, realizing that they were under duress.

seems like an eminently sensible policy to me.

20. God, these people are both insane AND evil.
The ones who don't think she *faked* her kidnapping hate her because they think she's lying about not hating America. How sick is that? I want to take a shower after reading their slimy demented hate screeds.

21. And some on DU are saying much the same. It is unbelievable!
Check out some of the other threads. I can't accept that some think her first statements are the genuine article and her disavowing is the lie!

I didn't even engaged in the conversation, I want nothing to do with it. I knew there were so much more to story then, what she was saying at the time. I am very glad to see her coming home in safer place.
