US evangelicals warn Republicans MUST DO MORE!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/4815912.stm

Prominent leaders from the Christian right have warned Republicans they must do more to advance conservative values ahead of the US mid-term elections.
Their message to Congress, controlled by Republicans, is "must do better".

Support from about a quarter of Americans who describe themselves as evangelicals was a factor in President George W Bush's two election victories.

The Republicans will need to keep them onboard if they are to retain control of Congress in November.

In the rest of the article, it says 75% of Evangelicals voted for Shrub in 2004, but that support is down to 50%!

1. Uh, maybe that 25% of evangelicals who have deserted Stupid
have done so because they've realized his policies are UNCHRISTIAN!

I know a few of them who have been completely turned off by his destroy the environment, rob the poor, fatten the rich policies. This may be what's at work in the drop in support among evangelicals.

I don't think giving them more sops in the form of feel-good laws restricting gay sex are going to do it this time.

2. Agreed....I think there is something else that is driving them
to try and force the WH to pass their issues...

They are about to lose all access to the WH come the elections this year.....I am hoping the churches lose their tax emempt status...they only understand money...they have received tax payer money from the government....they should pay into the system...

9. Most Evangelical-type curches are profit centers now.

Especially the megachurches. That should be plain and clear to all, save the naive sheep who go to such churches...

Yesterday I heard a spot on the news about Joel Olsteen's new book deal. Apparently it's one of the largest in publishing history - AND the guy gets not 20% royalties, but 50%!! That is RARE apparently!

3. I don't really care WHY they're deserting him, as long as they do it!
I don't know how many voters are in this "evangelical" group, but 25% of any base group is substantial! I suspect they are mostly from the "red" states! THIS is GREAT news I think!

7. AGREED!
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 12:06 PM by Dr. Jones
Spot on! You got it. I know of a couple of ex Bushie Christian freeper-types too who have woken up too, for the most part, but still I receive some pretty fishy responses from others in my inbox that surprise me in support of Bush.

I just hope this is the beginning of the separation of the Christian evangelicals from the Bush Administration! I've long been SO SICK of the divisions caused by this unholy marriage - lost friendships, strained relationships, etc.

4. I didn't realize the Taliban was a 'Christian' organization...
...of course most of the 'Christian' ones aren't, either.

5. Evangelicals need to abandon Bush/Republicans completely!
BUSH IS NOT
CHRISTIAN

Look at everything he has done in office.
Those are not Christian values.
And there is no way to bend them to make them so.

Bush goes against virtually every traditional
Christian standard.

11. You are INCREDIBLE!!
Yes! Thank you for posting this! Exactly!

I have been trying to warn our Christian Freeper friends/relatives this for YEARS now, lost many friends, was asked to remove them from our mailing list, was labeled a "hothead" and chewed out, and was ostracized for warning them just as you have in your post!

I would LOVE to see this warning pasted ALL OVER OUR FREEPER CHRISTIAN TOWN!!

12. Long long story with alot of cult psychology involved here...
Basically it was naivite. But also there is a code within evangelical Christianity that you don't DARE to question anyone who declares themselves "born-again." It was also the feeling that FINALLY, they accomplished their goal of getting "one of their own" in the highest office in the land - and that Bush would finally "turn this country back to Christ" as prominent pastor D. James Kennedy proclaimed they needed to do.

Then when the Christians heard that Bush had shared the Gospel with a teenager during the runup to the 2000 elections, that pretty much solidified their support of him. That story, by the way, was false - go to snopes.com and you'll see it was a hoax. But still, the majority of the Bush Christian Freepers believe it and would eschew anyone who says otherwise.

Cult mentality is the way I'd describe it - they are trapped in the Cult of Bush. Bush is their perfect, sinless, God-ordained leader and that's just the way it is. If you're on the outside of this Bush-worship, you're a liberal hellbound sinner. If you're in the cult and you dissent, you're a traitor and you are ostracized and ties are broken between you and the group.

13. WOW! I never really thought of Shrub as a David Koresh type, but
the way you explained it, it ssure sounds like a similar "Group Think" cult to me!

I've always wondered exactly what this "Born Again" thing really means too.

14. Like they **won't** vote for Republicans if they don't do more...
This is what "What's the Matter With Kansas" is all about -- all those horrible, sinful, **unGodly** things that the right wing promises its fundie base will be stamped out, never quite happens. And yet they keep voting for right wingers, even when their economic interests are in the toilet.
