Junior knows, very well, the political implications of a veto on this issue. It would sink him further. He's just using the threat of a veto to get his own way. He threatens, to bring everyone around the table to craft a compromise. Usually, the compromise is Junior getting his way.

Junior's veto and the Reps' nuclear option have something in common--they are hollow threats that would actually help the Dems.

The Dems need to call the bluff on these bullies, and let them shoot themselves in the foot.

I say...tell Junior, "Tough rocks...you want to veto, then move forward with this unpopular move which will allow the Dems to take Congress in 06 and impeach you? Have at it, big boy!"

He's not running for anything in 2008, so he doesn't care.

Congress wants to look light they're fighting terrorism, and from the Nays I think they'll probablyu override their veto (they have more than a 66% majority)

Bush also wants a nice cushy job on a board for one of the Mideast Oil Barons. He can pull teh "I did what I could" line and he still looks good to those who brought him.
