On a West Virginia mountainside: The Cost of War
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 07:47 PM by Boomer
While driving east of Parkersburg, WV, through a long stretch of wooded mountains and few homes, we encountered this powerful anti-war display covering an entire hillside:

(2299 Cost of War)

It was clearly visible from both east and west-bound lanes, and we were so impressed we turned the car around so I could take a photo. We have no idea who authored this dramatic scenario, but it made an indelible impression and I wish we could thank the people responsible.

2. That is fucking impressive
and it took a lot of work. Look at how straight the rows are. I have a lot of respect for whoever did that just because of the planning and effort that went into it. God (or whoever)bless 'em!

6. Note the flag at half staff, too
Just think if we the American people mounted a campaign to put similar displays in every yard, barnyard, field, hillside, etc around our nation!! Why not? We could do this!

5. Northside of Route 50
So this wasn't some back road of West Virginia, we're talking a major route through that section of West Virginia.

If you drive east out of Parkersburg on Route 50, it was past an antique mall (can't remember the name).

4. In Parkersburg? WOW!!!!
 I'm sorry for the emotion but Parkersburg and Beckley areas are heavily Bush-loyalist laden, from my understanding.

Plus, I was so surprised we lost this state to BushCO in 2004. We worked so damn hard.

Thanks for the photo. Obviously, it touched me.

7. Not 100% Bush loyalists
Believe it or not, just last year we were driving through Parkersburg and saw a monster pickup truck with a bumper poster (too big to be a sticker) spread across the tailgate that read:

BUSH SUCKS!

Lifted our hearts to see that sign in the middle of such a heavily red area. Boomer and Ms. Boomer travel back and forth to Ohio several times a year and it's depressing to see all the W stickers and signs.

11. A friend of mine, rural West Virginian, converted "W" to "aWol" and,...
,...placed a star on the back of his big-ass truck for every soldier killed. He emailed me last night that, a record 300+ people showed up for a "town meeting" (we ARE talking way rural WV, here). It hurts me deeply that, my circumstances prohibit me from being there. But, I was so,...grateful and comforted by the fact that,...they are pulling together, again, as the community that once was.

My wish: to create a support network for ALL of these folks who have the gravity and courage to express respect for humanity in spite of aggressive forces against them. That is my wish.b

9. Parkersburg yes, Beckley not so much
I don't know why Parkersburg is so damned red, but it's nice to know there are still some sane voices rising above the din of the dunderheads.

Wouldn't that mountainside make one helluva anti-war poster?

12. This is true courage
Making that kind of public display, facing the risk of retaliation, is pretty damn brave.

21. Thank you for sharing this.
It is poignant to see how others are handling their anger, grief and frustration.
I think that frustration will soon turn into fruition with these kinds of displays.
