Bush: "India and Pakistan are two different countries...
with two different histories." That's what our local paper reported Bush told a crowd over there. Huh? As if they didn't know that? God, is this the dumbest man on the planet or what? Like they didn't know that and needed him to tell them that?!?!?!?

There are Boundary issues that were never resolved, which drives the strife today.

9. The problem is he doesn't understand they DO share a history
Edited on Sun Mar-05-06 01:43 PM by indie_voter
This shared history drives their disputes today. For at least 350 years they were loosely one country albeit most of that time under British Rule. They became two countries in 1947 (Partition). To say they have different histories is wrong and shows he doesn't understand the problems in that region.

12. You're Right. A British presence was in India for about 350 years
Edited on Sun Mar-05-06 02:23 PM by indie_voter
The East India Company was started in 1600.

Parts of India were part of the British Empire for about 190 years of that time (closer to half the time of their first coming there than 'most'), though it took 150 years to get the whole place under their thumb. It really started with the Battle of Plassey in 1757 (funded by the East India Company).
