"I think Fred Phelps is gay"

IN MY OPINION
Fire, brimstone the surest way to say you're gay
BY LEONARD PITTS JR.
MiamiHerald.com

Allow me to share with you an epiphany. I think Fred Phelps is gay.

Not that I'd have any way to know for sure, and not that there's anything wrong with that. But it seems obvious to me that Freddie has spent a little time up on Brokeback Mountain, if you catch my drift. I'm thinking he's secretly into show tunes, interior decorating and man-sized love.

Granted, that's not the first thing that comes to mind when you talk about the Fredster, who is defined by an apparently pathological hatred of all things homosexual. Perhaps you remember how his followers desecrated the funeral of Matthew Shepard, the gay college student who was beaten and left to die on a prairie fence in Wyoming eight years ago. They showed up at the funeral bearing signs that said, ``God Hates Fags.''

Now Phelps has updated his act. His ''thinking,'' if you want to use that word, is that the casualties of the Iraq war are divine retribution for this country's tolerance of homosexuality. So, he says, thank God for the IED's, improvised explosive devices, that have sent so many American soldiers home in dead and broken pieces.

2. If Pitts gets sued over this, we've GOT to set up a defense fund
and throw fundraisers for him.

If for no other reason than how unbelievably cool the parties would be.

4. Hey, it could be true that gay bashers are closet homosexuals...
And I bet Fred Phelps - the guy who brings gay bashing to all time new lows - is definately gay.

8. BWAAAA!
Can you say ''self hatred,'' boys and girls? Come on, isn't it obvious? The poor fellow is gayer than a Bette Midler AIDS benefit. In San Francisco.

He needs not our condemnation but our understanding. Maybe someday he'll find the strength to stop living this lie. He might just go on to be the greatest gay rights activist this country has ever known. Maybe then, in the arms of the right man, he'll stop hurting.

Kind of chokes me up to think about it.

Of course, the Fredster will deny all this. He might even call me unpleasant names. Hey, that's his right. We may not see eye to eye on much, but on one thing, we agree.

Freedom of speech is a wonderful thing.

9. I always assume homophobes are closet cases
They usually are.

But seeing as how old Fred looks like the Cryptkeeper, I don't know who he'd be bumping uglies with -- Freddy Kreuger perhaps?

10. In a long life of watching people do idiotic, vile, venal things,
especially in attacking other people, I have found, universally, without exception (sometimes you have to dig a little) that they are covering up a deep seated responsibility--one they refuse to acknowledge and own up to.
What this great, pontifical observation adds up to is that he's either a tormented closet gay - most likely, or a tormented, closet something else, covering up for that by misdirection.
Never, absolutely NEVER, have I found anyone so heatedly in opposition to something, especially something they know so little about, without a private guilt driving them into insanity.
No rational, open person harbors such unreasoned hate.
So, yes, he's probably gay and feels enormous guilt about it, or maybe he killed his sister, or fuc*ed his mother or some such thing that he carries such a horrible load around about.
Does that mean I should feel sorry and forgiving for him? Absolutely not!!
We all have our own snakes to kill and we are responsible and accountable for killing them, ourselves, without making others miserable in the process.

14. This is news?
I misspent my youth quite profitably in Southern Cal and one of the fringe benefits was an excellent 'gaydar' (toward males, at least).
Many of the most vocal homophobes whom I met were 'closet cases'; very sad, pathetic humans whose entire lives were focused on their hatred of 'homasekshul faggot queers'.
All their energy, passion, focus, drive, EVERYTHING was centered upon fueling this hatred and denial.
Some of them had the 'nads and self-honesty to finally realize that they hated gays so much because they swung that way themselves.
'Coming out' was more difficult then, but man alive (and often it was a case of man ALIVE rather than just 'man existing') dumping that load of 24/7 hate off their backs freed them up to have a real LIFE that they could enjoy.
So many of them were different people once they finally came to terms with themselves. Sometimes they felt happy with their life for the first time.

17. He sure thinks about gays a LOT more than most "straight" guys do
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 08:29 AM by Frank Cannon
I'm just sayin'. I don't think I've known a real straight guy who thought much more about anything other than his own jobs/finances, his wife/girlfriend/family, his hobbies, etc. Gay people or what they're doing in bed just don't register on the radar.

21. He thinks about gays more than *gays* do.
Jeez, I take some time and think about work, my house, how my daffodils are coming up already, whether to take my car to the shop, etc.

This guy is "gays are evil""gays are evil""gays are evil""gays are evil""gays are evil""gays are evil""gays are evil""gays are evil" all day long.

Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 08:34 AM by FLDem5
if he was a medieval monk - he would flay himself every night for his "impure thoughts". Instead he tried to drown his true self in drugs and took his rage at his "imperfection" out on his children.

When they got too big and starting leaving his compound - he began to turn his rage onto the homosexuals in this world to keep the ones that hadn't left yet.

I think it is pretty obvious.

19. Would not surprise me a bit..
Edited on Fri Mar-03-06 09:14 AM by converted_democrat
I grew up in a super conservative church, and we had a youth minister who would give 15 min. sermons every Sunday..(Kind of like a warm up for the actual minister..) He gave 15 min. sermons every Sun., and when the regular preacher was absent he would preach in his place.. Anyway, every sermon that he ever gave bashed gays.. Didn't matter what the original topic was about, he always somehow turned it into gay bashing.. Every sermon would start out on one topic, and by the time it was over he was bashing gays.. Every freaking time.. It was just strange..

I left the church, but my family still goes there.. My Mom called me one day and said.. "XXXXXXX, you're never going to believe this.. The youth minister just got busted for using the church's credit card to view gay porn on the church's computer.." Then like a month later she called again to tell me that the youth minister was divorcing his wife, quitting the church, and moving in with his boyfriend..

It just blew my mind.. I mean this guy was on level with Phelps, though not as organized, and turned out he was gay.. I know enough about being gay that I know it isn't a choice.. He had to have had these feelings all along.. I can remember a couple of kids that went to church that were gay.. (They were minors and their parents drug them to the hate fest..) Two of them ended up committing suicide before they graduated.. (This was before the youth minister came out..) I get so pissed thinking about it.. If they hadn't listened to the hate that the youth minister spewed would they still be alive today? I'd bet they would.. They thought they were evil people because the youth minister told them so.. They were bright kids, and they didn't have a chance.. It just makes me sick to even think about it.. Hate does kill, I don't care what anyone says, hate kills people..

23. I think he's a pediophile or worse.
I don't think he is anything as simply conflicted as a tormented closet homosexual. I've seen the raging closeted homophobes myself, it's not that I exclude the possiblity.
But this guy--he's evil. I believe he's peverted in some extreme fashion, and I believe he's acting out on those perversions, like so many cult keepers we here about. A Jim Jones type. He creeps me out like a horror movie, in fact, he reminds me of that devil guy in Stephan King's "The Stand" in personality for some reason.

children. I'm not aware of any sexual abuse, but he clearly has some serious psychiatric problems.

26. When he finally croaks there will be some interesting stories coming
from inside the WBC compound... he has ruled his many children with an iron fist- deciding what they will do with their lives and whom they shall marry; two or three have even moved away and broken all ties. The WBC will probably not outlive him by very long.

27. I really, REALLY don't want that to be the case but...
...I have to admit that it's occurred to me. The same thing has occurred to me about that Michael Marcavage freak. Marcavage is a local nutcase here in Philadelphia who likes to disrupt Gay Pride events. The most obnoxious ones do often turn out to be closet cases. When I was in middle school the one guy who gave me the most problems about being gay, the guy I actually had physical fights with showed up in one of the local gay bars years later. I spotted him as soon as I walked in the door and got right in his face. Boy, was that sweet. We actually became friends after that. I don't see things turning out so cheery with Phelps and Marcavage though.
