the patient is in a secure area with limited access. Keeps nosy reporters from finding their way into the room. If the patient's condition deteriorates rapidly, he is in an area equipped to handle it.

Perhaps even partially shut down a floor in the hospital. But they would not use the ICU that way. There is no privacy, you don't have a phone, your door doesn't lock, there is a curtainless window looking into the room. There is no privacy in the ICU.

ICU has far less privacy than a private recovery room.

I mean, one of the the points of ICU is to keep an eye on the patient around the clock, so they tend to have glass walls, etc... in most hospitals that I've been in. Private recovery rooms usually have doors and their own bathrooms (and ICU beds usually don't).

So, BS on that explanation.

11. My dad was in ICU the last few days of his life

It isn't private. A curtain separates the patient from the nurse area.

Only a couple family members are allowed at one time and you have to call to ask to come in. When it became clear he wouldn't survive, they let family in without worrying about how many were crowded around him.

A private room has a door and a bathroom, I had one when I gave birth to my children.

10. Yep - that's bullshit. Every ICU I've seen (and I've seen my share)...

...consists of an open area with either curtains or clear dividers in between the patients' beds. In the center of the open area is usually the nurse's station. They're all like that. Privacy isn't something one can count on in ICU.
