5. Paid $160,000 after she lobbied WH on behalf of Baker Botts clients!!!
Like the bin-Ladens who flew out of the country, lickety split?

Or the Saudi government, who were sued for $1 trillion by the 9-11 families who wouldn't take the government buy-out?

Be nice to know who the clients were at Jim Baker III's firm that put up that kind of scratch to face up with Smirk and Sneer.

Lots of good info there, beside beer. Thanks!

8. Why
would Baker-Botts need to hire someone to lobby the Bush Administration? Baker-Botts is already as connected as it gets. It seems to me all they'd need to do is pick up the damn phone and make a call and they'd get a meeting. $160,000!!

25. How else can you charge millions of dollars
to lobby on someone's behalf if you can't show some expenses? Just pay someone with a 50,000 acre ranch that is dotted with producing oil well a pile of cash and you're sure to get a meeting with a WH insider. Ain't this a great country?

40. Spend a million to make a billion.
That's the K Street Way.

Money is the life's blood of politics. And when it comes to BushCo, they don't use it to make life better for ALL Americans. They do it for those on the inside. To reserve a spot there, you need to spend some to get some.

BTW: A hearty welcome to DU, Beowulf!

24. Actually not accurate
The oil and gas operator for this property, whoever that is, would post this sign in its area of operations. This is an advisory sign letting personnel and salesmen know the basic rules. It is not a "ranch" sign -- in other words, the sign does not apply to the ranch as a whole, since the ranch owner can do what they want (so long as it does not interfere with exploration operations). In fact, since this sign covers an area involving tight-hole (i.e., secret/proprietary) operations, the salesmen (of drilling bits, tools, etc.) are not allowed to drive to the site of the drilling rig without permission (an appointment). I would gather that there is a guard somewhere too.

23. That's an oil company sign.
Very typical on gates leading to a location. The producer is Richman-Geochem, the well is Armstrong Ranch #3. How ironic that they were near production location operated by a "Richman" company. Those rules only apply to the folks working for the company and any sales/service reps, not to the landowners and friends.

Of course, no one in the oil bidness ever would have guns or booze on/in them or in their car.

When they go as far as editing a news story on the fly just moments after it was posted, that tells me they're DESPERATELY trying to cover something up.

Ari Fleischer, Mr. McClellan's predecessor, said Tuesday that he suspected the reason Mr. Cheney failed to say anything publicly was because he viewed the hunting trip and the accident as part of his private life, not his public one.

....and the incident with Clinton and "that woman" was HIS public life?

39. And yet we have reached a time when...
...so much goes down the memory hole that these things matter only to a few.

That's the horror of America today. 1984 is happening, and yet if you pick someone off the street at random to tell him, he'll say, "What do you mean? It's 2006."
