I had hoped to start the new year with an upbeat and optomistic blog. However, in light of the mine blast in West Virginia, our first order of business is doing everything we can to help the trapped miners and their families.

On an unrelated note, the steady drip of misinformation continues from the Administration. Could any of you understand what the president was trying to say yesterday (see NYT story)? The president tried to assert that the NSA only wiretaps incoming calls without warrants, but the evidence is all to the contrary and Bush's own staff had to explain that he didn't really mean that. This comes on top of yesterday's blockbuster in the Times that the stand up James Comey (who appointed Fitzgerald) had refused to ok the warrantless wiretaps and even AG Ashcroft in the hospital refused to buckle to pressure, for some reason. What we are seeing with the wiretap scandal is a microcosm of everything we wrote about in our "Constitution in Crisis" Report -- pressuring the media, mistating the facts, usurping all power to the executive, deriding critics as unpatriotic, using the resources of the Administration to obtain retribution against the whistleblowers.
