NIH funding level cut for the first time in a generation..... Celiac
Edited on Mon Jan-02-06 04:40 PM by caligirl
Celiac.com 12/27/2005 - Funding for NIH (including the NIDDK which conducts critical research into Celiac disease) in next year's Labor-HHS Appropriations Bill is only slightly above last year's levels-inadequate to compensate for inflation and the development of promising research. However, Congress is also in the process of approving a 1% across-the-board cut to ALL discretionary programs (except Veterans programs)-including NIH.

This cut will decrease the NIH funding level for the first time in a generation and put in mortal jeporady the research that can lead to treatments and eventually a cure for Celiac disease. Not only will this cut affect the work of NIH for this year, but will set back medical research into Celiac disease for many years to come.

1. Are Americans suddenly becoming healthier? I think not.
Well, I can think of one news program that might actually cover this story, as Keith Olbermann has said he has Celiac disease.

How typically shortsighted of this administration, to cut back on funding for basic medical research, in favor of... let me guess... tax cuts for Big Oil?

3. yeah, he said he had a mild form of the disease back
when he auctioned off the Micheal Jackson Puppet Theater popsicle stick puppets on e-bay. All the proceeds, about $15K I think, went to a charity associated with Celiac Sprue.

4. It is a really tough situation for academic scientists
Research grants that people already have are getting cut and new funding levels are at an all time low with no turn around in site. Alot of us and people who work for us will be losing their jobs over the next few years. Its a tough career choice anyway that carries alot of risk and not alot of profit. Most of us do it because we like it - but now we are wondering what we will do when we're unemployed with an overabundance of medical researchers on the market.

5. Try Singapore or Europe, the Cali. stem cell group lost
two to Singapore this year. I know of one guy who left his research job in Berkeley for Germany. None of them spoke any German either.

And considering NIH finding pays my bills-that sucks. I might be looking for a job pretty soon. Me and countless others.
