Stunned at what Dr. Laura said re homosexuality...
I don't know if any of you heard this, but I was stunned.

A caller was concerned because her 35-year old sister decided to have
a relationship with a woman. The woman wanted to know what she should
tell her young children, about their aunt who would be dating a woman.

Dr. Laura said, "Obviously, your sister is a lesbian and she has been
denying who she is for many years. It's too bad, because people are
either born homosexual or heterosexual, and because they are afraid
or confused--they deny who they truly are. Some homosexuals are in
such denial, that they marry to further ignore who they really are.
This is unfortunate that people have to deny who they truly are, but
that is what you tell your children. You tell them that some people
are born attracted to the same sex, and some people are born attracted
to the opposite. However, some people deny who they are---and it's
sad and unfortunate--but that is what has happened with your aunt."

I was truly shocked. No moral lecture. No condescension. No, "This
is a lifestyle choice" blathering. She told the truth, without judgment--and
she even seemed to express sadness that someone would deny who they truly were
born to be.

That's very strange. Maybe she truly has seen the light and changed her ways.

9. Don't hold your breath though
1 statement, even a good one, doesn't indicate a complete change in attitude.

11. I know

but considering how vicious her statements in the past were, at least this could be a sign of hope. I'm taking this with a grain of salt.

edited to add: I still won't be listening to her. Regardless of if she's wizened up with her views, I can't stand her screechy voice.

4. That was exactly my thought...
...I know Dr. Laura was in hot water for her homophobic comments--several years ago.

I suppose even the most hard-line conservatives can become human.

I was seriously impressed. I'm always relieved when I hear comments
like this. The less bigotry and ignorance, in the world--the better.

Her comments give me hope that our species truly is evolving in the
right direction.

6. I was an occasional listener to Dr Laura
until that incident a few years ago, when her views on homosexuality came out. I haven't listened to her since.

I agree with you that it gives me hope as well.

10. Sounds like "Dr" Laura is returning to her original thinking.
When I first heard her on the radio she was not anti homosexual. She promoted long term committed relationships and condemned promiscuity regardless of sexual orientation. Then she took a turn to the far right and I haven't listened to her willingly since.

I haven't listened to her for years because of her swing to the right, but I remember her as pretty progressive on homosexuals.

right take over of the country. and i though she was responible back then too. same with dobson and bennett. i use to listen to bennett on education, and dobson use to be reasonable too. all these people went on blacklist over the last 6 years. what laura says here is consistant with her earlier talks

13. wow! when did this epiphany happen?!
Many times, when a social conservative has this turnaround, it's because of a personal experience. I suspect she may have a family member who is gay, someone who shook some sense into her.

Republican Senator Pete Domenici of NM is a staunch supporter of mental health parity, an issue that is opposed by most Republican members of Congress. Why? Because Domenici personally saw the dismal state of mental health coverage when his daughter got sick.

I suspect that social conservatives change their minds about <fill in the blanks: gay marriage, single parenthood, euthanasia, abortion, etc..> when it personally affects their own lives. Otherwise, they just don't get it. That suggests a lack of empathy and compassion in these people.

26. Key difference between a liberal and a conservative
A liberal can appreciate someone else's situation, even if they themselves haven't experienced it. Thus, we are pro-choice even if we've never had an unwanted pregnancy, we are pro-civil rights even if we are white men, and we are anti-Iraq war, even if we don't have children, spouses or grandchildren presently serving in the army.

Conservatives need to the be hit in the face with a situation before they can have a measure of understanding and / or compassion. Everything is "not my problem" unless or until it actually becomes my problem literally.

she still would rather children languish in substandard foster homes or orphanages than be adopted by a gay couple.

25. Not true. Her first pick is "loving, nurturing 2 parent family of opposite sexes."
Then she goes down the list of "next bests" and "loving, nurturing 2 parent family of SAME sexes" is right up there as a good thing. I can't remember if it beat out "single parent home" but I think they were close. In all cases, her criteria was a simple one: "What is in the best interests of a child?" And she was speaking in generalities, as opposed to specific situations. (Yes, we all know a single parent who is perfection itself, as opposed to the two parent nightmares we've all had occasion to meet, too, which is why the "loving, nurturing" criteria was tops in all categories.)

I am not making a judgment on the correctness of her position. I am simply recording it for accuracy.

Glad she is saying born with sexual orientation, and addressing denial being unfortunate. It will beice when she goes further into why some must deny or hide, and would be nice to get bi-sexual added, but I am wanting it all now.
