Soldier Dies In Iraq Just After Brief Return Home
Will Newgard Lived In Arlington Heights

(CBS) ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill.
The joy of a holiday homecoming gave way to sadness when an Arlington Heights family received the worst possible news about their 20-year-old son who was serving in Iraq.
As CBS 2's Mai Martinez reports, William Newgard, who had leave from Iraq before Christmas, was killed after his return to the war-torn country.

"Military officers arrived to give us the news to tell us," Kaki Newgard said. "I was pretty much in denial at that point, thinking, 'No, you can't be here for me. No, you have to go away.'" Friends who also have loved ones serving in Iraq are now helping Kaki Newgard cope with the loss of her son.

Memories of her son's recent surprise visit home for the holidays are also helping. <snip> Will Newgard even found time while he was home to thank the kids at the elementary school where his mother works for sending him care packages while he was in Iraq. He also took time to talk to them about what it was like fighting in the war.

"When he was asked three times in the classrooms, 'What are you afraid of?' each time he would answer, 'Running over something,' and that's how he died, so that was pretty tough," Kaki Newgard said. "So he knew that was pretty tough. So he knew the dangers of it." Social workers were at Gray M. Sanborn Elementary School on Tuesday morning to help the children who knew Will Newgard cope.

1. so sad
but at least they got to see him....and perhaps some of those children he visited with will grow up to be peacemakers, for they will have seen what the cost of war truly is.
