William Macklin - All Headline News Staff Reporter

Leonardtown, Md. (AHN) - A 14-hour police standoff ended violently when an officer shot and killed an Army Reservist who had barricaded himself inside his father's house on Christmas night after learning he was being deployed to Iraq, authorities said.

James Emerick Dean, 28, had already spent 18 months in Afghanistan and became suicidal when he was informed recently that he was being sent to Iraq, according to family members who called police Monday night and said the reservist was armed and threatening to take his own life.

Dean barricaded himself in his father's home with several weapons late Monday and threatened to shoot anyone who came inside, authorities said. Dean's father was not at home during the standoff.

According to authorities, Dean fired several shots at police between 10 p.m. Christmas night and late Tuesday morning. A bullet hit a car where a police officer was sitting, but the officer was not injured.

1. There's police terminology for these kinds of "suicides" isn't there?
Where the person provokes the officer to shoot them instead of the person having to shoot themselves....

Just tragic.

3. It's called "Suicide by Cop."
I wonder if, in this situation and others like it, just backing off wouldn't have diffused it and led to a more positive outcome. What a horrible shame.

4. Can you imagine how his father feels.
He called the police for help, instead they killed him.

NEVER CALL THE POLICE ON YOUR CHILDREN!

5. And the story of the 24 year old female soldier who refused to engage in torture techniques
killed herself in Iraq. This, is Bush's war.

8. More "collateral damage" of the war. Will Bush thank him for his "sacrifice"?
Will his name be engraved on the upcoming monument?
