A Steady Diet of Garbage
It started back in 2003, when I was taking a course in college called 'Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves,' which dealt with urban outcasts. During one of the discussion sections, a privileged white girl who came from Westchester in New York shared with us a bit of divine wisdom. See, I went to college at Johns Hopkins University, in the city of Baltimore, and every student knew that going to 'Greenmount' (the actual name of the neighborhood was Waverly) at a certain time by yourself was tempting fate. However, this girl expressed that if SHE were a big black guy, she wouldn't feel awkward about going to Greenmount after dark at ALL. Another girl (also white, also rich), chimed in that she was offended that there were groups for people of Indian descent and for black folk, but where was the group for white people??
I remember being astounded at the stupidity of these remarks. I had grown up in a small town, surrounded by ignorance and small minds, but naively expected something more when I went away to college. How silly of me. This restless feeling grew last year, when I was listening to the radio one morning on the way to work. The morning guys at the time (Reno and Frankenberry at 101.5 WPDH) were interviewing a couple of interns, asking them questions about current events. The two interns were both college students from either Marist or Vassar. This was around the time that Porter Goss resigned as director of the CIA. They were asked to name the retiring CIA director was, and they could not do it. They were asked who his replacement was, and they could not do it. They were asked WHAT FRICKIN' CONTINENT IRAQ is on, and they couldn't answer the question. However, when asked the name of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' baby, they knew right away.
I think I almost swerved off the road at that point. These are COLLEGE STUDENTS, supposedly educated and intelligent people, and they didn't know jack about the world they lived in. As I listen to the radio, I hear so many people call in spouting opinions about Iraq and terrorism that they were fed by the media that were either slightly wrong or really, really tragically wrong. Even the hosts themselves (I've heard 3 different morning teams so far), sometimes spout these lies with absolutely NO AWARENESS of the truth. They have no idea of what is really going on in the world around them, but when it comes to celebrities, they know everything.
Welcome to America in the 21st century. The rise in power of the corporate media (aided by Reagan's de-regulations in the 80's), combined with the doublespeak of the Bush administration and Fox News, has produced something wondrous strange in our country. The truth is not made readily available to Americans...the news that they are exposed to is only what the corporate media wishes them to see. Yet, the myth of the media being 'liberal' still persists and refuses to die...a clever tactic that has allowed Fox News to gain so much of its power as a 'Fair and Balanced' network.
This lack of truth in reporting contributes to the ignorance of the populace. We are fed, again and again, tons of gossip news about celebrities, as if we are expected to care about their lives. Their existences become drama for us to consume, and we devour it greedily, just as we devour stories about missing white girls. Everything the media does is designed to manipulate our emotions and our thoughts...we are given the drama to distract us from what is really going on. We are being given bread and circuses, and most Americans consume it with alacrity.
Our world is filled with celebrity, fast food, mass media, fast living, and decadent wastefulness. We have become, in our power, a fat, contented nation too lazy to challenge ourselves or seek the truth, but rather perfectly satisfied to digest what is given to us without question. From childhood, we are fed on a steady diet of garbage, and the result is the America we see before us. Small towns are being consumed by developments for the privileged, small businesses are being muscled out by mega corporations, more and more strip malls are erected and our country's beauty diminishes bit by bit. The threat of global warming looms large on our horizon, yet still we purchase gigantic gas-guzzling SUVs and consume our natural resources with wild abandon.
This year, in November, we finally succeeded in triumphing over the GOP and voting in a Democratic majority to Congress, giving us full control for the first time since the 90's. However, why did we win? I doubt we would've won if not for the Iraq War. Plain and simple, it was a single issue election. Never mind all of the corruption, the violation of the constitution, the raping of our environment...people care about Iraq, and that's all. Of course, it doesn't apply to us DUer's...but for most Americans, it's simply all that really mattered to them. They developed this perspective because of what the media told them...but even there, they are not getting the full story, they are unaware of how bad it truly is.
The only thing that REALLY bothers us is how American troops have been killed. We don't REALLY care about all of the dead Iraqis, unless the media tells us to. Stalin once said that one death is a tragedy, while a million is a statistic. The death of one American soldier is weighed much more heavily then the dozens, even hundreds of Iraqis being killed each day. Yet, it's so easy to ignore even the dying American troops, just as long as we're getting a steady dose of news about TomKat or Brangelina.
They sent you off to school as a child, to be indoctrinated as a patriotic little citizen, given a whitewashed propagandized version of our history. If you are raised in a strict Christian family, and further indoctrinated with a healthy respect for being obedient, complaint, and unquestioning of authority, then so much the better. Children are inundated with commercialism, mind numbing television shows, and fast food, fed garbage from the moment they can process what they are seeing and experiencing.
As they grow, boys are taught to take advantage of women, be strong and domineering, authoritative but unquestioning of the authority that governs them. Women are taught to be obedient and submissive, and told what their body image should be, and how they should value themselves, by a shallow mass media with no concern whatsoever for the psychological damage they inflict on young minds. As they grow older, the damage leads to eating disorders, objectification of the opposite sex, and worse.
The final straw for me was reading the article in Rolling Stone about the factory farms. We consume, we pollute, and we cause such suffering to the environment and to the animals that we devour. We think we're so big, so important, but the world doesn't exist just for us. Ann Coulter said that God told us to take the world and rape it. We certainly are. I don't know about all of you, but I've been having an ominously warm winter up here in upstate New York. We haven't had so much as a lick of actual snow so far, and that worries me. Cause it's happening all over the world...and we, America, are the world's biggest contributor to the problem.
Not only do we consume a steady diet of garbage, but we produce it as well. Our factory farms produce tons of toxic pig excrement, our cars belch tons of pollution into the atmosphere, and we as individuals produce tons of waste, filling more and more landfills with the fruits of our great society. The world is our victim, and we are sheltered from its effect by a largely indifferent media that wants us to stay uninformed.
An informed society is dangerous to its leaders, because they will be held accountable for their actions. Due to the controls enacted by a corporate media and the rising power of fundamentalist mega churches, we are a largely uninformed society. We have begun to make steps in the right direction, but there is still so much misinformation out there. The first step you can take to free your mind is to turn off your damn television.
I haven't regularly watched tv since 2004, and let me tell you, it's a wonderful feeling. Just turning on the tv these days make my mind ache, I can hardly believe I used to watch that garbage. If there's something from the Daily Show or Countdown that I really want to see, I can find it on You Tube or Comedy Central's website, usually.
In addition, we should do our best to inform those that do not know that the truth is out there if they seek it out. The government WANTS us to be ignorant, and little by little, we are breaking that down...but we haven't won a total victory yet. The media is still corporate controlled, and they will be against us...so we must find other ways to reach the people.
Also, we need to be stewards of the earth...when we take control of Congress in January...we need to start pushing...and pushing hard...for changes in our environmental policy. We can't afford to wait to meet the threat of global warming head on.
Finally, do yourself a favor...if possible, do not shop at Walmart. Try to stick with smaller local businesses. Support small businesses, clean farms, and independent media outlet. The only way to put an end to our steady diet of garbage is to cut it off at the source.
If we want America to survive for much longer, we must take up this burden, for it was the time of bread and circuses which preceded the downfall of Rome...

(sorry for the length, I could've gone on forever, but I decided to stop there...hope everyone enjoys this posting)

I have trouble myself with the America we have created. My trouble is that I am PISSED! I find that my blind hatred for what is going on around me stops me from acting more.

...every time I listen to the morning radio show, I grit my teeth...so many people call in...so ignorant...it baffles the mind.
Even my otherwise very intelligent uncle buys into the whole Iraq-terror link thingy that many people STILL believe!

5. I am sometimes tempted...
...but fortunately the urge just never strikes me anymore...I can get all the news I need from the net (and more accurate news than I'd get from watching TV anyways), and plenty of entertainment, without the commericialism being shoved in my face (banner ads are sooo much easier to ignore than tv commericals)

15. Indeed it was very interesting...
...and the professor often got VERY annoyed with the ignorance of the students...I remember she really laced into the girl from Westchester one day (can't remember about what) but it was really funny.
Unfortunately, the class brought out more ignorance and subtle racism than I've ever seen in my life, and that's saying something, considering the redneck town I grew up in :)

37. I just about didn't read your post after the first
paragraph. It's funny how you speak of AWARENESS, yet show none regarding the rich women from Westchester. Assuming you're male, you probably rarely worry about where you walk or drive at night. With women (rich ones or poor ones), they worry about being attacked. I thought the young woman was being honest when saying she wouldn't go to a particular neighborhood unless she were a black man. (The operative word, IMHO, is man). You thought she was being racist...I think you're comments are sexist...in that I don't think you understood WHY she said that. And maybe you don't care.

See, everyone can be made aware of other's feelings, fears, and problems.

And btw, Factory Farming has been going on for a very long time...I'm glad you discovered it. Maybe now you might want to look into rape of women (as opposed to our land) and see how our system of 'Justice' treats the victims.

But I guess that wouldn't be as much fun as ridiculing Miss USA and her breasts, would it? I don't know if you're as enlightened as you think you are. It's terrible to treat pigs inhumanely, but women are fair game???

There's Ignorance and then there is Willful Ignorance.

Education is the only way...and that means trying to communicate...the hardest part is listening.

39. I apologize...
that wasn't the only racist thing she said. There were many others. That was just the first one, and one that stuck out in my mind. I wish I could remember some of the others. I am not unaware. Sexual assault was a common problem on our campus. They gave us rape whistles for a reason. Also, one of my closest friends was a rape victim, and two of my ex-girlfriends. In one case, the people responsible were NEVER punished. She even pointed the guy out to me once...never came closer to killing someone as I did then...so I am also aware of how the 'justice' system treats rape victims. It has affected people very close to me.
I am well aware of the effect that it had on them. I couldn't comprehend the pain that it had caused them...but I could learn from it.
And actually, I did worry where I walked when I lived in Baltimore. Everyone did. It was a matter of being safe. It doesn't matter if I'm male or not. Sure, I'm not likely to be sexually assaulted, but I am likely to be robbed, if I'm dumb enough to walk around in the wrong neighborhood.
HER assumption was that blacks were SAFE from this violence (notice she said 'BLACK' man, not just man...she added that racial qualifier!), which is her displaying HER ignorance.
Whereas, most of the rest of us realized that a criminal isn't going to check to see the color of the skin of the person they point a gun at.
I hope this clears things up a bit for you, but I rather think you jumped to conclusions about me and made assumptions about me that were unjust and unfair.

44. Actually, I got the impression that you were
blaming the women for being 'stupid' for conforming to society's pressure.

The messages that our media and peers push are sometimes difficult to battle...and it takes courage to stand up against the 24/7 pressure to be 'normal.'

Our culture is currently sedated under a heavily macho patriarchy unlike what I encountered growing up in the '60's where 'peace, love, and rock n' roll' ruled. I have empathy for the pressure young women endure to be 'accepted.' In fact, I've stopped watching TV...the stereotypes of women are just unreal. But that's an entirely different topic.

And since I did live in those 'peace, love and rock n' roll' days, I have met many, many liberal/progressive men of the movement who told me to get them a cup of coffee and/or go make copies. The past 26 years have been one very nasty BACKLASH that I hope is coming to its end.

I'm not attacking you...just giving my impression...we all can evolve into being more enlightened and justice-oriented individuals. And everyone has prejudices...I'm afraid they're part of being human.

45. That wasn't what I was trying to convey at all...
...I was blaming the society itself for PLACING that kind of pressure on young women to begin with. I've also had close friends that were victims of eating disorders...it's a difficult thing. I don't blame the young women for it, because I've seen and been assaulted by a nonstop barrage of objectification that encourages them to sacrifice everything just for the sake of a desirable appearance.
During the formative years, such influences can have a siginificant impact on impressionable young women. They're not stupid for conforming to it...they're doing what they feel that they need to do in order to be valued by our culture. The pressure seems to be much more firmly placed on young women, in terms of it having an effect on their self-esteem and self-worth, while with young men, they are mostly encouraged to be domineering and engage in objectification.
The one-sided nature of this is just one way in whcih our society is still largely very sexist. There are many tenets of Christianity, too, that are quite sexist, and considering how many fundies there are out there...this also contributes to sexism.

to the radio these days is scary (except maybe for the handful of lefty shows around the dial).

Do only Republicans call radio shows anymore? No matter what I'm listening to, it seems that only Republicans and completely uninformed individuals call in when the show is talking about some political item. Sometimes, you may get one semi-informed non-conservative, but they usually get it wrong too. The hosts are usually as bad or worse.

The media is completely screwed in this country.

24. I notice the difference from us here in Canada
Watching American TV is like observing another universe. There is rarely anything intelligent to watch, unless it's a PBS, Discovery or A&E special. It's all pretty, and easy to digest, sure, but challenging?
Please.

Now, I'm not saying that Canadian media is better, but at least we aren't afraid of thinking, criticizing our government or demanding content above the seventh-grade level. Sure, there are people here that like the "reality" shows, but we still like watching hard-hitting documentaries and newsmagazine shows as well.

On the whole, Canadians find Americans curious in their choice of "entertainment". Shows are sometimes overtly sexual, yet America is one of the most prudish countries in reality. Violence is glorified and neat little black-and-white moral messages seem to prevail. And the commercialism is out of control.

America has some of the best thinkers, humanitarians, scientists and artists.

But you'd never know it by watching American TV.

Good post!

25. Another kick....great post
I too found the Rolling Stone article apalling...something seriously needs to be done about factory farming. It's cruel to the animals, the people, and the land.

On top of the misinformed/uninformed nature of Americans, pile a nice dollop of fear; fear of "terrists" as Bush calls them, bad guys and miscellaneous amorphous bogeymen, and other purported hazards, and you have a recipe for a completely pliable and controllable populace. A cowardly and incurious body politic. It is all so perfectly disgusting. As you say, bread and circuses...with a phony "war on Christmas" for dessert, to keep them distracted from the fact that their friends, neighbors, and loved ones are coming home in a god damned box.

I hold out little hope for a culture whose idea of a great hit song is "My Humps"...

35. Excellent post.
I can't stand to watch the tv news anymore. The new anchors are even worse than the old ones (Brokaw, etc.)They look so earnest and involved in what they are telling us but the stories are predigested and all seem to demand a certain standard of docile acceptance at face value. News is just events that happened today. The "commentary" provided by think tank stuffed shirts is always dull and predictable pablum.

Not long ago I saw a bit of our local news at 11. The longtime anchor woman was reading the news and looked perfectly coifed as usual. The camera went to film footage but inadvertently switched back to her. During the short break she had picked up a hand held mirror and was caught primping at her hair. She realized she was on camera and the startled look on her face was hilarious. It just seemed to capture for me the self obsessiveness of these talking heads. Her hair was impeccable but yet she couldn't resist a quick double check between camera turns.

42. Makes me think of that song...
...'Dirty Laundry' by Don Henley. Ever hear it? Still very fitting for our times.

Now I can say I knew you when...

Seriously, wonderful post, and I'm not just saying that because I ditched my tv a long time ago too.

I used to leave the boob tube on for background noise and only watched a few shows each week but I still found myself arranging my schedule around the tv guide.
Now I control the intelligence that enters my household, my blood pressure is down and my IQ is up (I swear it shot up ten points as soon as I unplugged the thing).

Killing your tv is VERY liberating. Like you, I get all the entertainment I need from the net, my stereo and the video store.

38. You knew me when I was a contentious angry poster...
on the R/T forum :P
I have to admit, I play far too many video games than is good for my sanity... :freak:
i wanted to go on about how it disgusts me that Christmas has become the greatest consumer orgasm in our society, but i forgot to include that. oh well, perhaps a future infuriated rant...
and yes. just watching TV for a few minutes now...my brain starts to numb whenever commercials come on...ugh...
