Sen. Johnson Conscious After Brain Surgery
Johnson Conscious After Brain Surgery
By MARY CLARE JALONICK, Associated Press Writer
16 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Sen. Tim Johnson (news, bio, voting record) has been conscious at times since his emergency brain surgery last week, his spokeswoman said Monday. But he is currently being sedated so he can rest.

The South Dakota Democrat has made it through the first 72 hours since the Wednesday evening brain surgery, spokeswoman Julianne Fisher said, a benchmark that doctors consider a good sign for recovery. The senator remains in critical but stable condition, she added.

Fisher said the next "target" for doctors is to watch his progress over the next week.

The senator showed some signs of recovery late last week, responding to voices, opening his eyes and moving his limbs. But his long-term prognosis is still unclear.

1. Been there
I've been there -- skull fracture, not stroke, but bleeding on the brain.

Not as bad as the Senator. When they asked me (to see if I was compos) what was the year and who was the president, I got the year right. I couldn't quite get myself together enough to say "President? We ain't had no legal president since 2000." So the docs took my failure to answer as a bad sign ....

But I'm proof one can come back from this sort of thing. (You do believe that, don't you?)

6. Under sedation Johnson will be more responsive than most Senators from last Congress.
