'No doubt he suffered unduly'

Convict's half-hour execution spurs inquiry in Florida

December 15, 2006
BY RON WORD

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Defense attorneys and death penalty opponents were outraged Thursday over an execution in which the condemned man took more than half an hour to die, needed a rare second dose of lethal chemicals and appeared to grimace.

''I am definitely appalled at what happened. I have no doubt he suffered unduly,'' Angel Nieves Diaz's attorney, Suzanne Myers Keffer, said after Diaz died by lethal injection.

Executions in Florida normally take about 15 minutes, with the inmate rendered unconscious within three to five minutes.

But Diaz took 34 minutes to die and appeared to be moving for most of that time.

He began grimacing

1. I said it elsewhere, but If you're going to have a death penalty, do it the Chinese way:
One bullet to the head. Or, if you prefer, multiple in front of a firing squad.

If you're going to have a death penalty, dispense with the bullshit humanity. If you're going to kill, then kill; don't pussyfoot around the issue. What difference does it make how a person is executed? He's going to end up dead regardless.

:sarcasm:

What kind of fucked up logic would one have to follow to make sure a person is "as comfortable as possible" if all you're going to do is kill the person? It's like getting dressed and looking good before jumping into a plastic shredder. Absolutely moronic. I'm against the death penalty on moral grounds, and this is just another reason why.

2. I don't think there is a humane way to condemn someone to death.
what must that last week of life be like? Maybe as humane as you can get is if he is convicted, while the jury is reading the verdict, he gets a bullet to the back of the head before he learns that he has been convicted.

3. Can't they do ANYTHING right in Fl?
They can't vote, they can't count, can't teach, can't keep track of foster kids, can't keep their religion out of their politics, and not they can't carry out an execution in the prescribed way either!

Geesh! And on top of that, theysay Jeb is a GREAT Governor!

5. Agreed
but just wait. Very soon a crowd will show up in this thread to say they're glad he suffered, they wish he could've suffered more, and they'd happily inflict that suffering themselves.
