"Andy Rooney Is Internet Hoax Victim"
NEW YORK (AP) - Andy Rooney has never been shy about his opinions, but now he's being bedeviled by somebody else's words being circulated under his name.

Rooney said on Tuesday that a racist commentary falsely attributed to him is circulating over the Internet and through e-mails. The "60 Minutes" essayist wants anyone who might have seen it to know he had nothing to do with it.

"I suppose it's not important, but I hate the fact that people think I've been writing these things," he told The Associated Press. "That's hurtful to me."

The missive, which Rooney said had been passed along to him via e-mail several times, is a list of several anti-minority statements. One of the printable ones: "I have the right not to be tolerant of others because they are different, weird or tick me off."

1. No one should be set up like that
but I had to stifle a giggle at the wording - it does have the ring of Rooney.

2. Rooney came right out and called the administration
and the talibornagain insane years ago!

Just flat out said it. He has no friends on the right, and they are smearing his name.

3. Lasher's First Rule of Email
If you receive a broadcast email that contains quotes by Andy Rooney, George Carlin, or Robin Williams that message is probably a string of lies

Snopes has done a good job here of exposing the several email frauds against Andy, which have been circulating for some time now. If you want to see a genuine transcript and video clip of one of his finest commentaries, hit this link

4. I saw a printed copy of this e-mail sent from one co-worker to another
laying on a table, and immediately went to Snopes to verify its authenticity. It confirmed that it was a fake, but the cc list on the e-mail confirmed the "office wingnuts" to me, and it was enough to make me pay more attention to them in the future...

5. That's really fucked up.
Rooney is not a racist and does not have those ideas.

The interesting thing is that the true author decided that it would be accepted as Rooney's because of Rooney's outspoken style and simple down-home delivery. It really drives home the underground nature of white people's racism in contemporary society. It's like "If only we were as outspoken as Andy, we could say all those things they really feel that SOMEONE should say." Stealing Andy's style to espouse those ideas is calculated. Falling for it speaks volumes about those who fell for it.

What a shame than anyone would receive that email and believe it came from Rooney.

8. Didja ever notice how annoying the sound of my voice is?
Why don't I just retire already? Extremely elderly people weren't using up all the top network jobs when I got started. Why is that?
