Gore's not running, he's too fat
He's put on way too much weight to be even considering it. If he ever slims down to his former svelte self maybe then you can start dreaming.

1. He's certainly NOT "too fat"
Excuse me, have you taken a look at Bush lately? We're not exactly talking "Mr. 6-Pack Abs" here.

Why would Al Gore's weight have any bearing whatsoever as to him considering running for President? And who the fuck would even care?

and another 50% subconsciously.

Don't misunderstand; I like Gore. But we're kidding ourselves if we think superficial, trivial stuff doesn't impact on electability.

79. It's a combination of things.
First he looks like a lame dragon's ass.

Second he is a lying sack of shit.

Hence you have about 98% of Dems against him.
and about 60% of indies against him.

And if you have those two things against you there is not enough Repuke votes in the entire galaxy which could save you.

16. Taft's bathtub....
it took four men to install it and they could all fit inside and lie down, it was so big. The White House staff had to remove Taft's corpulent form from the old tub man times so he had the above tub made to accommodate him. Could you imagine being a staffer at The White House and be called upon to remove the "fat man in the bathtub".

That reminds me of a "Little Feat" song! "There's a fat man, in the bathtub, with the blues". I wonder if that was written about Taft?

That's the reality.
People are shallow as hell. Proof positive: the recent mania around Obama.
It's all about his looks and his behavior. Not much substance there.

Either Gore will look like this again

or he has no chance. Period.

I would add that Gore is quite stupid not to realize that. People do no pay attention to his message if they laugh
at him because of his weight. And I say that as one of his fans.

I mean, look at John McCain. Hell, he's no male model, either.

And need I remind everyone that Bill Clinton in 1992 wasn't exactly svelte, either.

I just think the weight thing is given way too much emphasis. There are, as we've surely noticed, a lot of problems the next President will face. I can't believe the voting public will be so shallow as to fixate on some candidate's weight.

He is boyish or WTF.

Clinton was never as fat as Gore is today.

I just think the weight thing is given way too much emphasis.

I agree. But you should understand that most people live outside of DU. And they can be so extermely dumb and shallow
they will vote for anyone just because he is cute. I actually heard that nonsense from Bush voters who were otherwise not wingers. Of all voters swing voters are the most ignorant and most superficial. And they decide every election.

The most irritating is that Gore by default is a good looking guy. He just doesn't seem to care about himself nowadays and that's stupid. If he looked good more people would be willing to listen to his message. It's beyond me why he doesn't understand that. Or why Tipper doesn't understand that for that matter. She should kick his ass.

I can't believe the voting public will be so shallow as to fixate on some candidate's weight.

This is the same public which gave 50 million votes to the moron in 2000 and 62 million in 2004.
Remember no one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.

89. 2006 was not a a presidential election.
There is a fundamentally different standard for lawmakers and for presidents.
Gore himself pointed that out in his book in 1992.

Moreover, it took one heckova disaster for most voters to finally grow up and start looking at Bush what he is:
not a down-to-earth likable cowboy from the neighborhood but a miserable failure and an irritating asshole.

No I don't think the voters deserve any credit for being that slow. 7 years -- starting with 1999!
These were the same voters who made him president twice (not counting Theresa LePore and K. Harris)
Now it's too little too late.
We lost 2900+ troops in Iraq. We lost two towers in New York. We lost NOLA. We lost our surplus.
All of that because of stupid shallow indy voters who didn't care about anything in 2000 but the "beer test".

48. There is no such poll just like there is no poll
which shows Hillary benefits from the Clinton name
or that Gore was screwed in 2000 because many voters wanted to end 8 years of Dem rule in the White House just for the sake of ending 8 years of Dem rule in the White House or that Ford was screwed because most Tennesseans would not vote for a black man even if they denied that when the pollster called. (I.e they lie)

These are not measurable factors but they do play a role.
The 30% maybe an underestimation. They may be far more silly superficial voters out there.

I didn't.

Who supported the stolen election?

I didn't.

The fact that Hillary is a Clinton helps her a lot.
The fact that most votes decided not to vote for Gore back in early 1999 did screw Gore.

You don't think that at least 30% of the voters are superficial?

Well then exactly how did Bush get 61 million votes in 2004?

And I'm a newbie I don't know what significance a disabled profile has if any.

63. Now you are suddenly the wide-eyed innocent?
Are you saying that Bush voters saw him as more physically fit than his opponents? Wow, I guess Bush voters are even more stupid than I thought. I just thought that they were naive and bigoted enough to believe that Bush would protect them from gays, feminazis, and brown people.

Gore received more than half a million votes more than Bush did in 2000. That makes it seem pretty doubtful to me that voters were just tired of Democrats in the White House.

Are you saying that Bush voters saw him as more physically fit than his opponents?

Noone said anything like that.

Wow, I guess Bush voters are even more stupid than I thought.

They are certainly very stupid. Why is that news to you?

I just thought that they were naive and bigoted enough to believe that Bush would protect them from gays, feminazis, and brown people.

Wingnuts believe that. And they are still happy with him.
But why did indies vote for Bush?

Gore received more than half a million votes more than Bush did in 2000. That makes it seem pretty doubtful to me that voters were just tired of Democrats in the White House.

Then why did Gore have to start his campaign 15% behind Bush?

Yes Gore could win a bare majority because he worked his ass off and had a superior GOTV operation in the last 72 hours. But it was an uphill battle because right at the beginning most voters decided they would not vote for Gore.

Poll: Gore gets high marks on issues, character but lags behind other candidates

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 15) -- What's up with Al Gore?

The vice president has a 62 percent approval rating, and a majority of Americans agree with him on the issues and say he has the necessary moral character to be president, a new CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll shows.

But only 41 percent would vote for him in a hypothetical match-up against GOP front-runner, Texas Gov. George W. Bush, according to the poll. Four in 10 of those surveyed said they definitely would not vote for Gore in November 2000 regardless of who the Republicans nominate.

Which of the following statements best describes your chances of voting for Vice President Gore for president -- 1) You definitely will vote for him regardless of who the Republican Party nominates 2) Your vote for Gore depends on who the Republican Party nominates, 3) You will definitely not vote for him regardless of who the Republican Party nominates?

Poll: Majority of Americans would vote against Gore in 2000

So, a majority of Americans currently say that they are likely to vote against Gore even before the GOP picks its nominee. To be elected next November, Gore must win over two-thirds of the people who say they are "not too likely" to vote for him.

Looking ahead to the presidential election in November of next year, if Al Gore is the Democratic nominee for president in 2000, how likely is it that you would for him: extremely likely, very likely, fairly likely, not too likely, or not at all likely?

Extremely/very likely 26%
Fairly likely 16%
Not too likely 15%
Not at all likely 40%

53. That's the 30% that STILL support Bush
Edited on Thu Dec-07-06 09:29 AM by Horse with no Name
and would support him regardless if he ate newborn babies on the teevee.
They are idiots. They wouldn't vote for Al if he looked like that picture you are showing (which your phraseology alluded to a very freeperish connotation--however, I will let that go...for now).
Anyway---you are attempting to pander to a group of brain dead morans. Not sure of what reasons you might or might now have.

59. 30% who still support Bush are actually
ideologues not swing voters. Bush looks like a monkey but they don't care because
he is wingnut just like them.

I'm talking about those in the middle who have no loyalty to either party or ideology. They are the most shallow type of voters. They do care about how a candidate looks far more that those on the left or the right.

61. Fuck the swing voters.
They exist in a vacuum and in talking points.
But most people that I know--Republican and Democrat alike--have said they will vote for Gore if he runs.
I live in a very small very red town.
The day after Thanksgiving I went to Walmart to look at what they had that night.
They had 50 copies of An Inconvenient Truth. Half of them were packaged with lightbulbs and were a pretty nifty giftset.
However, I had made a pact that I wasn't going to shop that day.
I went back a couple of days later, and all but about 10 of the Inconvenient Truth DVD's were gone.
In a town of 3000, 40 copies were purchased.
So you do the math.
People are ready for a change and I am willing to bet they will overlook a couple of spare pounds for the good of the country.

65. The last election proves that swing voters do exist.
You can call them independents if you want.
The Dems won not because they suddenly had a large liberal base but because indies deserted the Repukes.
They are about 30% of the electorate.
And since the two bases mostly follow the party line, it is swing voters who decide the elections.
Those who are persuadable not those who already made up their minds.

a couple of spare pounds for the good of the country.

The problem is it's not just a couple. It's a lot.
He is not just overweighted. He is obese. And if he does not change sooner or later he will pay the price.
Does he want to end up under the knife like Clinton before he is willing to wake up?

Obesity is the #1 health problem in the US. Gore is not an exception. He should take care of himself, damn it.

Nice to hear you story about the AIT copies. Too bad the country is bigger than just one small town.

41. The next Mr. Olympia automatically becomes President of the United States.
Think of it...all he has to do at the next G8 conference is to strip down to a pair of posing trunks, oil up his body and do a posing routine. And...imagine how those other world leaders will react to that sheer bodily perfection!

47. People that are overweight can't run for office? Gore is not
fat, in fact he is probably in the best shape of his life.... The statement though makes me wonder what you have against overweight people.... Are they somehow less than human or something?

I think we should run Nicole Ritchie for president. She could be the ultimate troll candidate. She's got all the qualifications necessary, according to them. And really, what else do you need in a president besides a lack of a weight problem?

http://www.urbanaddiction.com/nicole/nicole_latte_001-thumb.bmp

If that doesn't work out, we could try Mary-Kate Olson or Lara Flynn Boyle.

72. Um, last time I looked Al has lost some weight
from when he was his heaviest. Perhaps he is in the process of losing a lot of weight now so leave him alone. He isn't any heavier than my husband and I think my hubby is cute. I thought he looked cute on Oprah, especially at Lowe's when he was showing things you can buy to save energy. And he is a very nice genuine guy who really seems to love his wife and kids. Not very usual in today's political world. Some of the media and right wing will always make fun of/go after Gore as they see him or did see him in the past as an easy target because he is such a nice guy. I think they're afraid to after Hillary or McCain because they know what they're a capable of. But Al's resiliant and a fighter and just turns around what these people say about him and uses it to fuel his passionate side. I think the 2000 debacle took alot out of Gore but he is just getting back on his feet now and looks very happy with his life. He may or may nor run but seems to be enjoying himself. That is good enough for me.
