Mitt's Presidential Ambitions Just Got Tanked.
Edited on Fri Dec-01-06 09:12 AM by cali
I don't mean to steal anyone's thunder. Greywarrior has a post up about this, but I don't think his thread title conveys the importance of this. Mitt Romney hired illegals to do the gardening at his home in Belmont, MA.

I think this totally screws his chances at the nomination.

SUCHITEPEQUEZ, Guatemala -- Outside his aqua-colored concrete house here, Rene Alvarez Rosales paused under an almond tree to answer questions about a subject with which he has surprising familiarity: Governor Mitt Romney's Belmont lawn.

For about eight years, Rosales said, he worked on and off landscaping the grounds at Romney's home, occasionally getting a "buenos dias" from Romney or a drink of water from his wife, Ann.

"She is very nice," said Rosales, 49.

About 6 miles away in Copado, a 37-year-old man who recently returned to Guatemala from the United States told a similar story, describing long days tending Romney's 2 1/2-acre grounds.

"They wanted that house to look really nice," said the worker, who asked to remain anonymous. "It took a long time."

5. I'm thrilled about it.
I can't stand Mittens. He's slick and ambitious to the point of being amoral. Can't wait 'til the loony right gets a hold on this story. They will freak.

2. Repost New Link
You may want to repost a new link. I may be the only person having this problem, but I was not able to get to the article page. I was sent to the help page.

In regards to Romney's chances being over due the the illegal hiring that may not be so. Pelosi is going through a scandal of her own in regards to her vineyards and not have unionized workers. I know the issues are somewhat different, but if Pelosi can get out of that scandal, even if the law is primarily behind her it might be possible that Romney can get out of this. However, history does support your claim in that illegals have in the past hurt certain people chances at getting certain high level government appointments. I however, think Romney's politics are more of a roadblock to him getting the Republican presidential nomination.

8. Keith addressed Pelosi's supposedly "scandals" last night.
Edited on Fri Dec-01-06 09:09 AM by Democrat 4 Ever
First Pelosi pay wages higher than union wages at her businesses and BY LAW can not mention to her employees to form a union. They, of course, can form one if they choose but as an owner she cannot even bring up the issue or help them in their endeavors. The employees have all been found to be legal immigrants, they do not want a union and Pelosi, once again, rises above the silly neocon reichwing's smears.

*Damn typos.

14. Read a Debunking
I read a debunking at Think Progress. However, I think there are things that she could do to change things. For instance, she could push to allow owners to encourage their workers to unionize. I think that is a legitimate argument against her. I truly like Pelosi and wish her the best, but I think she may be able to do more. In addition, I think if she makes it, which she will, anything can happen for Romney.

18. Again, Keith reported it is ILLEGAL for an owner to aid their employees
in unionizing. Not sure the logic of the law but apparently it is one that Pelosi - Speaker of the House or not - has to abide by. And why would she want to get into the mire and muck with the repugs by legitimizing the smear? I'm pro-union all the way but let's not fight battles when none exist.

And I didn't understand your statement - In addition, I think if she makes it, which she will, anything can happen for Romney. - huh?

9. Thanks,
fixed, but a couple of points. Pelosi is not running for pres, and she's not a repub. Illegal immigration is a much hotter topic in the repuke party than in the dem party.

3. That will be a noose around his neck
I think he could be shoved through anyway - but he'd have to have the party machinary behind him, and I don't see that he has that.

4. one by one the more conservative candidates are falling:
Allen, Frist and perhaps Mitt (but I'm not sure this is enough to keep him from running). This increases the likelihood it will be McCain.

10. Keep Your Fingers Crossed
We should pray that this harms his chances.

Willard "Mitt" Romney is stunningly evil and 20x brighter than Bush - but he's so slick that he even fooled Mass. voters into thinking that he was other-than-evil. A very, very dangerous package.

11. Yep.
He is that. But I believe this is extremely damaging to him. The activist wing of the repuke party hates illegal immigration. This and his Mormonism (although I don't think it should) will drag him down. Remember the Clinton AG appointment for AG who had an illegal nanny?

15. Yes...
Zoe Baird was her name. I remember it well during the Clinton transition. I was 11 or 12 at the time.

Also, his second nominee, Kimba Wood, a Federal judge, had the same debacle befall her, I believe. Janet Reno was Clinton's THIRD choice for the post.

16. Thanks.
I couldn't remember either of their names, but I do remember what a stink it caused, and the furor, particularly within the repuke party, over illegal immigration, is at a much higher pitch today, than it was 12 years ago.
