Petro-Dollars, Patriotism, and ignorance
Everyone already knew what was driving this fiasco. * doesn't even hide it anymore! At first it was "resources" earlier in the year, then he comes right to the point and says oil.
Smedley Butler was right! "Where the dollar goes, the flag follows, and the troops follow the flag."
I like some of Rangel's arguments. Especially the suggestion that if the country was in any real danger everyone should be willing to sacrifice in it's defense. Most of the "support the troops" people couldn't even tell you what the #1 reason was that we were given for invading Iraq. That's pathetic!
There is absolutely no winning for us in Iraq. The enemy has no uniforms. They are shadows! One doesn't battle shadows with conventional forces. Only counter-terrorist forces and intelligence can defeat "the enemy" (and a populace that doesn't condone "insurgents" in their community).
The military establishment actually prefers this continuous long war. The departments get an endless supply of funds. The troops make extra money by deploying (unless you're NG or a reservist with a better paying civilian job). The fact is, if we were only paid what we got for Desert Storm there'd be a lot more military folks complaining and even more getting out. It's many times more deadly than our first incursion over there, but the way we live there now is completely different.
