Confession - I am responsible for 150 straight ticket republican votes
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 08:12 PM by daveskilt
I run a nursing home. Our folks want absentee ballots - and I always make those ballots available and help our resident's vote. Even the ones who ask where nixon's name is on the ballot. They don't know what year it is but they all want to vote repub down the line. Oddly it makes me happy and gives me hope that the inexplicable 30% bottom for bush does not mean that 1 of every 3 people you meet is a delusional freeper - they may be suffering from dementia instead.

on edit: DU clerics/priests/prophets/vicars/pastors/televangelists/holy types please let me know - does this mean I will go to hell and do I have a penance to perform?

20. don't think I wasn't tempted!
What made me send them in was the fact that the first people to come forward and ask for their ballots and ask if I mailed them in are our African American resident's - every single one of them. It then occurs to me that our residents were in their 20's 30's 40's and 50's in the sixties - hell some of them had grandparents who were born as slaves! the right to vote means a lot more to some of our resident's than it does to most people and I won't take it away from them.

25. Thats a fun vision - some of these folks are pretty amazing
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 08:31 PM by daveskilt
I had one resident who had photos of herself hanging out with Langston Hughes and other folks from the Harlem Renaissance. Says they all called her 'Dirty Ruthie', another resident talked about marching with Martin Luther King, of course I also had a resident who was a pirate in the 1920's off the North African coast. These folks had and still have lives - some of them did amazing things and changed the world. If we can all say that about ourselves in 2050 as we sit drooling and looking for Clinton's name on the ballot, it will be a good day.

Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 09:31 PM by kath
ACK!
MLK, and others who fought so hard for freedom, would surely spin like tops in their graves for such a stupid act.

Watched "Eyes on the Prize" a few weeks back. The racist Repugs are of the same ilk as the racist Southern governors and police chiefs who turned fire hoses and dogs on those who marched for freedom, and beat them to a pulp. :puke:

14. I would have told them it's a new law that the ballots had
to be filled out in pencil.

Then I would have gone through them, erased away the (R's) and "penned in" DEMS all the way down the line.

I guess I would never qualify to work in a nursing home, would I? ;)

In case it's needed, I was just kidding.

for every senile person that votes a straight GOP ticket, there is a 95 yo DEM that is smart enough to call 911 to get a ride to a polling place. It balances out in the end. This is what it is about. Letting everyone vote. Heck if you live in Texas, I'll come out there and sign them up for you.

40. "Either you believe in Democracy -- or you don't"
Many years ago, I had some very serious leftist friends, long-time socialists, who decided that they would contribute to changing the local government by registering new voters. They set up a table for a week and collected voter registration forms from anyone who walked by who wanted to register. And they put them in an envelope without looking at them for the whole week. And at the end of the week they set off to take to the local registrar. On the way, being overcome with curiosity, they gave in and looked at the hundred or so voter registration forms they had collected -- and they had been registering three Republicans for every Democrat. They sighed, delivered all the forms to the registrar, and later told me: "Either you believe in Democracy -- or you don't." Of course, they also spent a lot of time in the community doing political organizing and political education work, so the fact that they had willingly registered Republicans may actually have given them additional credibility in that not-very-large-town.

I doubt if I would go out of my way to help anyone with clinical dementia obtain a ballot, but whenever I've made an offer to drive people to the polls or help them vote in any other way, I have not inquired further into their political affiliations.

Everyone gets a vote, and even if someone disagrees with us, we fight for their right to cast that ballot. Thank you for what you did for those old folks, and I hope that there are principled people like you taking care of us when we're old and trying to figure out how to use our new brain implants to vote for the Democrats. :)

43. I applaud you!
I live in an area (southern Arizona) where there are numerous assisted living/ nursing homes. Many of those people who live there need help with day-to-day living. If that means helping them fill out their ballot, I'd help them and would never think of filling in something they don't want. I may not like their choices but they have every right to vote their own conscience even when someone else is wielding the pen.

Honesty and integrity is what it's all about when helping these Seniors live.
