THIS is How We Make Electronic Voting HONEST ! ....
Edited on Tue Nov-07-06 01:11 AM by Trajan
First : We design Electronic Voting Machines to accommodate ALL types of voters, from the healthy to the infirm, to the deaf and the blind, or challenged in ANY way .... Let's MAKE SURE all voters can VOTE .... This is one of the proclaimed benefits of the EV systems ... I agree this is hugely important ..... This is already in place ....

Second: Use the Electronic Voting Machines to capture the intent of the voter : The Electronic Voting Machine converts the intent of the voter into a storable, recoverable PAPER BALLOT: .... NO hanging chads .... NO Vapor Ballots .... A ballot that is PRINTED by the Electronic Voting Machine in a uniform manner that is EASILY readable by both human counters (when necessary) and ....

Third: Publicly designed, publicly owned and operated Electronic Tabulators that have hardware/software of an open, exposed, controllable architecture, that are SPECIFICALLY designed to count Electronic Voting Machine generated ballots, and do so quickly, accurately, and openly .....

Really : This ISN'T rocket science ..... It is a damned Widget Counter ....

Can MY great nation execute an Electronic Voting System that we can trust and use ? ...

Damned skippy we can .....

ALL we need is the honesty to recognize the need ....

We would have to start from the ground up .... So destroying the current hardware (legally) would be a nice start ....

Using ANY of their design is questionable ..... the hardware is especially unknown .....

Has anyone actually dissected and reverse engineered any voting machines from a hardware perspective ? ... I would be curious : Any extraneous antennae ? .... I have always feared secret remote communication more than any other surreptitious gambit .... It doesn't take much to talk to a damned coil of wire ....

7. Yup. Transparent, verifiable vote counting is a no brainer--by hand or
by electronics.

Funny we don't have it.

But we might have to get it by a backdoor means--for instance, mobilize this huge new block of voters who are voting by Absentee Ballot because they DON'T TRUST THE MACHINES, to pressure local election officials to, a) HAND-COUNT the Absentee Ballot votes, and b) POST the results BEFORE any electronics are involved. Simple, common sense demands, clearly in accord with what Absentee Ballot voters want. THEN, after we win that point (or at the same time?), we put further pressure to EXTEND that procedure to the optiscan ballots. Count them by hand, post the results before the electrons start spinning.

Thus, we create paper ballot system BY DEFAULT. This strategy circumvent the vast corruption among both Dem and Repub election officials and legislators that HAVA's $3.9 billion has fostered--one of the biggest obstacles to election reform. It avoids a head on collision with entrenched corruption, and with what are clearly evil and dangerous corporations.

What we are seeing in this huge increase in Absentee Ballot voting is a VOTERS REVOLT against the machines. But it's mostly unorganized. It's the action of individual distrustful and discontented voters trying to get around the rigged electronics. Organize, though, it could be a mighty force--and I think it's best utilized locally. (I don't expect real reform from Congress--even a Democratic one--too much corruption on this matter.) It's going to be up to We, the PEOPLE. We election reformers have done a lot of good work over the last two years, but we have failed to provide a STRATEGY to achieve transparent vote counting. And here we are in 2006 wondering, are they going to steal it all, or just part of it, or what? We need a practical strategy, and I think this is it. Build on the Absentee Ballot rebellion!

8. Excellent comment! Constructive criticism and
specific commentary is crucial in defining the problem and creating a venue to resolve the issue. Now, the job needs completion within a year's time span. No pork, no BS. The opportunity awaits, and could be a business model worth emulating. Uh oh, can we do this honestly, and with the utmost integrity? F**k yes! Lead by example, good things will follow.
