reagan's daughter on rush, M.J. Fox, and that ad.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15417821/site/newsweek/

Oct. 25, 2006 - When I was a kid, I was once being teased relentlessly by a bully at school, and I faked being sick to stay home and avoid him. My parents knew I was faking (the thermometer under hot water trick didn’t work) but they also knew something was wrong. My father came into my room to talk to me, and I willingly confessed. He patiently explained to me that the best way to deal with a bully was to totally ignore him—treat him as if he is invisible. Because all bullies really want is attention.

I got it right back then. I returned to school, ignored the persistent bully, and he backed off. I seem less able to do that now when a bully by the name of Rush Limbaugh has accused Michael J. Fox of faking the symptoms of Parkinson’s (OK, he actually said “acting”) for political purposes. Fox, who could easily be held blameless if he reacted with rage and vitriol, has exhibited grace and dignity, ignoring the blathering accusations of the radio host and expressing appreciation that, just two weeks before the midterm elections, we are discussing stem-cell research. We could all learn from the way the actor has responded to cruelty; certainly I can.

Limbaugh, on the other hand, flagrantly broke the law by procuring large amounts of drugs and then escaped the punishment that someone who is not white, wealthy and famous would have gotten. He spends his time insulting people and gets paid handsomely to do so; now we have seen that even those with serious diseases don’t get a reprieve from his cruel bluster. And his apology doesn’t cancel out the nastiness of his original comment.

Fox could slink away and hide his disease from us—few would blame him. Instead, he is using the misfortune that came his way to try and open doors to a miraculous future—a future in which diseases like Parkinson’s, diabetes, ALS and Alzheimer’s could perhaps be cured. He will be known for that work, as well as for his dignity in the face of insults.

His daddy didn't even recognize him at a Republican fundraiser...and that was well before he became symptomatic with Alzheimer's disease. As much as I am disgusted by his words and actions, I always feel bad for him. He's seems to be trying hard to please an unloving father.

Most likely not, this fuck can say what ever he likes and his ditto-heads follow him and nothing ever happens.

Let someone on the left make accusations about something like, oh, say a president faking his military service as a factual news story and what happens? He gets booted off the air.

The ONLY was to deal with a bully is to confront him and show him to be the coward he is. Stand up to him every time, no matter how often he assaults you, and he will eventually give up, move on to easier prey.

Her brother Ron is also a wonderfully intelligent, sane liberal. If I had a chance to vote for Ron Reagan for a high level political office, I would jump at the chance! (He has also vigorously, brutally criticized Bush's idiocies, and once said, a la "Curly Joe" in City Slickers, that his father crapped bigger than W.)

I don't know whether Ron is really a liberal or which party he would choose if he ran for a political office because it could be that he is a Conservative on other issues.
I think that he talked in 2004 because of this one issue and he did a wonderful job while doing it. His intelligence and humanity could definitely inspire people.
No one knows better about this topic than those who had relatives slowly dying from it. They know how bad it is and they don't want to see it happen to anyone else. That's what he seems to be fighting for.

for the cause of SCR, although SCR hasn't shown evidence of being able to cure any of his afflictions: addiction, hypocrisy, deliberate cruelty, addiction to CUBAN stogies, ad nauseaum.

The famous people speaking out bring out the human element in all this; faces of people who are directly or indirectly victims of these ailments. I despised Ronald Reagan's policies, but I wouldn't wish Alzheimer's on Mr. Reagan or anyone else.

Thank you, Ms. Davis. If Rush goes after you, do what you said your dad said. Ignore him with grace.

and instead of ignoring them, I pushed back. Because they are cowards, they are shocked and scared that someone stands up to them. I took a punch sometimes, but the chicken shits always backed off. Fuck Limbaugh, he is what he is. He and the other asshole Hannity are not on the air to engage in discourse. They are Rove's well paid lap dogs and just do what they are told. If you want to be pissed off, think of this. These two assholes broadcast partisan right wing politics every day on PUBLICLY OWNED AIR WAVES. Remember it was Ronnie Rayguns who destroyed the Fairness Doctrine and saved the collective ass of AM band radio. Here in Fort Worth on WBAP or as I call it WGOP, they broadcast nothing but right wing bullshit all day and all night. Limbaughs audience is not what it used to be and he will say anything to get the attention he craves. Think about it and you realize he is one pathetic son of a bitch. Relentless ego maniac and pill popper, this bag of shit can't even keep a wife. Was it number 3 or 4 who left him last? He has to get a fronted prescription for viagra and then go to the Dominican Republic to get laid? So fuck this bastard. Get mad all you want, but remember what a sad asshole he really is.

but yet, I still don't feel sorry for him. And as far as pushing back, you are correct in that assesment as well. Bullies are cowards and usually when one takes a poke at them, they run away cowering. So we should push limbaugh back and push hard. I did my (small) part by calling the local radio station that carries his show. The man I talked to was polite, but I don't think limbaugh is going to be taken off the local airwaves. But if enough of us push back, eventually he will be.

28. Rush Finds New Low in Mocking Michael J. Fox
By Margaret Carlson

Oct. 30 (Bloomberg) -- There was a time when politics wasn't a blood sport.

At the end of the day, Tip O'Neill shared a whiskey with Ronald Reagan, and Senators George Aiken and Mike Mansfield had breakfast daily. Now it's routine to call your opponent a liar, a coward, or an al-Qaeda operative.

Last week, the public debate hit a new low when radio talk- show host Rush Limbaugh accused actor Michael J. Fox of being a fraud.

Limbaugh claimed that Fox -- aka Alex Keaton of the television program ``Family Ties'' and diagnosed in 1991 with Parkinson's disease -- was faking his symptoms in a series of campaign ads on behalf of candidates who support embryonic stem- cell research. ``Either he didn't take his medication or he's acting,'' Limbaugh said.

In a streaming video from his studio, Limbaugh can be seen faking the symptoms of a Parkinson's patient as he waves his arms and bobs his head.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601039&refer=columnist_carlson&sid=aWiQTFob5JB8

Afraid of Yuppies

If destroying embryos is murder, why can't the right wing and President George W. Bush, who used his first veto ever to withhold federal funds for stem-cell research, go after yuppies pursuing in vitro fertilization techniques that discard embryos by the thousands? Because they would be crushed at the ballot box. It's safer to pick on sick people.

Edited on Mon Oct-30-06 09:57 AM by Marr
He told me to hit them as hard as I could, in the nose. Then, time permitting, hit them again. And again. "You may get beat up, you may not", he said, "but they won't bully you again".

And he was right. Ignoring bullies doesn't work. They don't want attention, they want to hurt someone that can't hurt them back.

Still, I understand her point. Michael J Fox has made Limbaugh look like an even bigger ass than usual by refusing to engage him on his level. But you know- that doesn't mean that the rest of us should ignore his shit.

41. Where's OUR Ron Reagan?
I haven't seen Ron for a while and surely has some very valid things to bring up. Patti, I'm sure speaks his feelings, but it'd be nice for Ron to put an exclamation point on this. I even think the late Maureen would have favored SSR.

Rushbo could care less about the criticism. In his hive, he is king and isolates himself with dittoheads who feed his bombast as he's their meal ticket. This hive includes every radio station who airs his propaganda and these people should be held in the highest contempt.

Feel like getting some venom off your chest about this issue? Look for your local Rushbo affiliate and give a few choice words to the station's General Manager and Sales Manager...lay it on thick and heavy as most of these people need to understand they're not blameless for all the smears going on and you hold them (and their advertisers...mention a local one or two doesn't hurt) responsible. Had they not aired this fukstick, a lot of the hatred that runs across the political landscape would have no central point.

The only way to put Rushbo in the our rear-view mirrors is on the local level...one station at a time...acting locally. Last week, it was reported that Clear Channel...the largest purveyour of Rushbo's excrement is facing an LBO by several firms that surely will break apart this company and have a profound impact on radio. Nows the time for those with radio knowledge, background and/or money to get your ducks in a row.

The broadcast industry is scared of a Democratic majority...it means killing what remains of their "deregulation" and forces them to face some serious financial music they've been able to avoid through past dereg bills. Come January, when another disastrous quarter of poor performance is reported, look for some major changes in the way we see and hear things.

46. But, did you notice the comments at the end of the article
defending Rush and accusing Ms. Reagan of skirting the issue?

47. Ron and Patty are wonderful, but we need their mom to stand up
Her's will be the most powerful voice because she is a very partisan Republican and an icon for many on the right. If she were to add her two cents, Rush would be in a very awkward position.

Having stated that, my gut tells me Nancy Reagan won't do it.

55. And where the hell is that sop Arlen Specter?
MJF stood up for him when he was asked to support that Milqtoast Specter so wehre is Arlen now when a good man needs his support. Of course Arlen doesn't want to help defeat a Republican in a tight race so maybe he will have something to say on Nov. 8th who knows maybe then he will get some balls. If you want to ask Arlen why he hasn't made a statement of support you can call him @:

Tel: 202-224-4254.

78. Specter is a moral coward.
He pops up every now and then to scold the right, then abandons his principles at the first sign of trouble for himself. If he stood up for Michael J. Fox before November 7th I'd pass out. But oh boy, watch out for November 8th. He'll give an earful to Rush just as soon as it's blessed by KKKarl.

49. Speaking of Michael J. Fox, Rush reminds me of Biff from Back to the Future.
I really wonder what sports almanac he stole from the future to earn his undeserved success.

80. I was thinking the same thing--wouldn't it be great if MJF
would come up with some kind of a clip with Rush as Bif? I'm sure Jon S., Stephen C., or Keith O and their writers would help him come with up a gem!

52. It's even worse than that...
Rush at first accused Fox of going off meds to exaggerate the tremors.

When it was brought to light that the meds actually INCREASE the tremors, Rush accused Fox of taking MORE meds to exaggerate the tremors.

What an asshole.

67. A strong statement at the end of the article.
"There are no stem cells, though, that can cure heartlessness. Cruelty is a demon that feeds on itself. Limbaugh’s fate is ultimately the harsher one."

This could apply to the Cheneys and the president

70. This is a Quality of Life Issue
Not an opportunity to bash political opponents.

This issue goes to the core OF quality of life. Any lawmaker that determines that they are the sole judge of where the quality of life stops for another human being has no business legislating this issue. We all deserve a quality of life that allows us to be a productive individual.

71. I saw Michael J. Fox today....
he was in town campaigning for Chet Culver, Iowa's Democratic candidate for governor. When I say I saw him, literally that is all I did. See him. I volunteered at the event so I didn't get a chance to get a place in the room where the event was held. There were hundreds of people packed into the room. Hundreds. Because I was stationed at the sign in table, I didn't have a chance to hear his speech but I saw clips of it on the local news. (Such is life as a volunteer. You don't always get to see the event you work.)

I am in awe of Michael J. Fox. We need to work harder than we have ever worked in the next week to make sure that Democrats get put back in power. At the national level and almost more importantly...the local level.

86. Cool.
I think Michael is trying to prove that he is/was Reagan's "real" son. He doesn't have anything to prove. He is Reagan's real son; unfortunately, he's the son of a first marriage. Moreover, things didn't go so well after the split. Michael's reaction to this whole thing is the problem. He swerved far right, and it was some crazy reaction. He never got counseling for it, I presume.

Ignoring a bully is guaranteed to not work. What you have to do is fight the bully. Even if you lose, just the fact that you are willing to fight will usually encourage him to move on to a weaker target.
