Dear Senators Mikluski, Sarbanes and Reid

I am more than concerned about the potential and highly probable confirmation of Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. I have always been proud of my families having been in this country since it’s founding. My ancestors fought in the battle of Yorktown to free us from a unitary authority, the King of England. I would hate to see their actions and those of all the founding families of this country come to naught by the usurping of the separation of powers. Judge Alito has expressed his belief that the President should have nearly unlimited power. The damage of any such rulings by the Supreme Court will be long lasting and devastating to our country. For this reason Alito must not be confirmed.

As the father of a teenage girl I am also most concerned about her rights to an abortion. The decision to have an abortion is not an action that should be taken lightly and I hope that she would never have to make that decision, but should she ever have the need and desire to end a pregnancy I want her to have the option of doing so in a safe and legal manner. By confirming Judge Alito the shift in the ideology of the court would put a woman’s right to choose in serious jeopardy.

A woman’s right to choose goes hand in hand with other privacy issues and we have seen in recent days that the NSA has no problems with setting aside those rights. General Hayden this week showed that the NSA does not completely understand what our Constitution states in the 4th amendment. I have nothing to hide and yet I am fearful of a government that believes it can set aside my rights in pursuit of those who would do our country harm. I do not believe Samuel Alito would ever rule to uphold my rights. His confirmation must be stopped.

I strongly support a filibuster of Judge Alito. The time has come for the Democratic leadership to unite the party in opposition to this nominee. If the packing of the supreme court with right wing ideologues is not worthy of a filibuster what is?
