Be it about being gay or smoking or religion, quite a bit of energy is lost that could or should be focused on the upcoming elections.

If it were fun, or enlightening, okay. But it's more often devisive and counterproductive.

I'm looking for an argument on that :-)

seriously though, it's often the "wedge" issues that get everybody's panties in a wad. A lot of these discussions are started up "in general" by the right wing and are supposed to keep us all divided and discussing smaller points while overlooking the big picture.
