The high-powered weapons were dismantled and hidden inside various bags and equipment. But U.S. Army inspectors found them before Kellerman left Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan.
That search, two months ago, led to additional searches in Broward County -- and the discovery of other caches of weapons, according to a federal criminal complaint.
On Friday, Kellerman, of Fort Lauderdale, was charged with unlawful possession of firearms and other weapons-related charges, according to a criminal complaint unsealed by the U.S. District Court.

FORT LAUDERDALE · A federal air marshal from Fort Lauderdale has been charged with trying to smuggle explosives and illegal weapons into the United States while serving in the Army Reserve in Afghanistan, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday in federal court.
David Neal Kellerman, 44, also has been charged with several weapons violations linked to a cache of stolen or unregistered weapons and explosives authorities said they found on his houseboat near Las Olas Boulevard and two public storage units he rented in Deerfield Beach and Dania Beach. Investigators said the stolen weapons belonged to the air marshal program and the military.
Kellerman, who owns a private security and police/military training firm called Special Ops Associates Inc. in Fort Lauderdale, was in federal custody in North Carolina on Friday night. He is scheduled to be extradited in time for a court hearing in Fort Lauderdale on Monday. snip
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives began investigating Kellerman on Aug. 24, after Army officials contacted the agency about Kellerman's alleged attempt to smuggle the contraband on his return flight to the United States. snip
According to the complaint, Army investigators searched Kellerman's baggage and found 32.5 pounds of C4 explosives, 11 grenades, a full spool of detonator cord, one live rocket-propelled grenade warhead and one rocket-propelled grenade launcher disassembled in seven parts. Investigators also said they found several high-powered military weapons that had been taken apart and concealed in a DVD/VHS player, laminating machine, a computer bag and inside Meals-Ready-to-Eat wrappers.
