Boston, MA folks - your help may be needed - please read
Okay, I know it is late now and maybe too late to help today, but if you are in or around Boston, please check out this series of diaries at dailykos and consider contacting the point people (evident from the diaries) about how you may be able to help. This seems to be a very serious situation, and even if the person is found, some follow on help would almost certainly be warranted.

The latest on the poster "Buffy Orpington": http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/10/10/20568/014

That diary has links to the other important diaries.

Please take a few moments of your time to check out these diaries and consider if you want to get involved and help out.

2. Kick for Buffy Orpington:
Here's the latest update from DKos:

The news so far...(25+ / 0-)
The police have been to her apt. The police confirmed that the pic we have of "Buffy" is the same woman in the apt via the super of the building. They entered the apt and the only thing they found was her cat. The dogs were not there.
I contacted the library closest to her apt, and sent them her pic. They will call me if they see her.
This is where I am getting frightened, to be honest:
It has been discussed that she does not have a car. She sent her diary apparently from the Library (or so we must assume). She is not at the apt, and no one in the building has seen her since this morning early, including the superintendent. She is apparently not in the hospitals that Rena contacted.:
Where could she be at this point?:
I contacted all the local homeless shelters, and there is no one fitting that description amongst the folks who have come in to eat or shower. but I find it odd she would go to one of them if the apt is still available to her.:
I am afraid at this point, as it is now dark and cold and there is no sign of her.:
Please say some prayer the police can find her. Occam's Hatchet and I have talked and he thinks I need to stay put in PA until we both hear back from Boston PD.:
A different world cannot be built by indifferent people:

ANYONE in the area who can help out PLEASE check out these diaries and get in touch with the people organizing this search. It could be a matter of life or death.

3. Part of the point of the internet is to connect with others.
I hope that the online community can help Buffy. My thoughts and prayers are with her.

5. From one of the folks working hard on this
http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2006/10/10/20568/014/50#c50

I'm exhausted. (5+ / 0-)

In a physical way - not an emotional one. Well maybe a little emotionally, but that's besides the point.

I have messages in to all the animal shelters, animal refuges etc. in the area. I won't hear back from them before they open tomorrow, though.

The people who are working on this are the best. I don't want to leave anyone out so I won't name names, but a lot of email has been flying back and forth with ideas, updates, location suggestions, contact suggestions, and to a person every one I'm in touch with is going way above and beyond.

God bless, everyone. And if you don't do God, then just glad tidings and good thoughts.

it sounds like you've been doing the real work. I just saw this over at dailykos and thought it should be here.

We only need one more recommend, and a lot more folks will see it.

10. Oh no...
Seriously. I'm doing some phone and internet legwork, and some very basic coordinating of people who are in Boston looking. THEY are really knocking their asses out to try to make something good happen. One Kossack was on the phone with the Boston police until they agreed to go and look in her apartment, and it took some doing. Another got all all of her information and called her family to try to get some information that could be helpful. I know two people are literally at her apartment right now trying to find her. They are MY heroes.

And it's GREAT that you posted this here and added that link. Otherwise I wouldn't have seen it at all.

11. Hey I just noticed - you just signed up here!
Welcome to DU! :hi:

Wish it was happier circumstances, but we're glad you came over. Hope you'll drop in again and share your thoughts from time to time - there are lots of folks here who cross-post to and from dailykos.

I agree with you about the Kossacks you mentioned - they are indeed heroes. You all are.

15. For those who are not also regulars at Kos
Buffy is a nurse, but her own physical ailments mean that she can't do regular floor work and lost an admin/supervisor type nursing job for whistleblowing - I don't remember the details I am sorry to say.

Anyway she was having trouble finding work. Moved to Boston for a job that then fell through. Has three older dogs she rescued and one cat.

Money and opportunity seemed to be running out for her. She is a strong advocate for Universal Health Care.

She is a Democrat.

She may need our help.

16. Today's updates
I wanted to kick this back up today for Boston DUers.

The update diary at Kos right now is at:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/10/11/75053/524

Latest post:

The "troops on the ground" are coordinating another in-person check of the apartment, and will work it with Boston PD in a little over an hour or so.

We will have a picture available, and as of 2 pm EST the last known contact will have been 24 hours ago, so we will also be in a position to file a missing persons report.

As things get ironed out and news comes in, more info will be added.

Note: when this diary reaches or exceeds 300 comments, Emmasnacker has offered to launch a new one to replace it to ensure that it doesn't bog down. It's ready and waiting. When we hit that point, watch for another update here and on the main header for this diary.

Thank you.
