I guess I suffer from a chronic case of morbid curiosity so I went to the westboro baptist church website. I was totally horrified by the signs that those people were holding up at military funerals. I can't image what those families must feel on seeing such brutal, vicious signs at their loved one's funeral - of all places! How Phelps has gone this long without getting his ass beat is beyond me.

How utterly shocking! I can't believe that they would do this stuff.

One sign simply said, "God Hates You!" Oooookaaaay ... whatever you say suckababy.

He was actually a civil rights attorney in the 1960s then something snapped, and he just really started hating homosexuals and started going batshit crazy and got disbarred.

I've run into him twice now.

First time was at my brother's law school graduation at the University of Kansas (where he graduated). They were holding up signs that said, "Kansas Gayhawks," and stuff. I was disappointed in that I couldn't think of anything to do to them on the spur of the moment when we were walking into the building the ceremony was in.

Second time was in Tulsa. They came to protest a gay rights picnic, and they were given one small corner of the park that it was held in. I got across from them with two signs: God Is Love and Fred Phelps Is a Wanker. I'm a pretty big guy (probably useless in a fight though), but two of the protestors put down their signs and started across the street... until I took out my juggling torches and lit them. :)

Personally, I don't see Phelps as any more than an annoyance-- a really bad act at Open Mike Night at the comedy club. Even real homophobes don't want to be associated with him and he's not really a threat to anyone. Just another clown.

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he was secretly funded by a gay organization just to make the homophobes look worse than they are.

BTW, my personal favorite was a few years ago when Phelps had a flyer claiming Bob Hope was roasting in hell for doing an AIDS benefit before he died.
