If Roe is overturned...
Edited on Mon Jan-23-06 08:31 PM by WI_DEM
I see Gallup has a new poll showing only 30% opposing Alito. However, most peoople are not paying attention. The fact is that the majority in this country are very passive and don't pay attention to the news or issues. I would guess that if you asked people who have had a strong interest in the Alito nomination that a majority actually oppose him.

But the "Know-Nothings" will wake up if Alito is confirmed and a majority over-turns Roe. What will they think when we return to back-street abortions and young girls and women killing themselves by trying to get an abortion using wire hangers?

What will they think when the wives, girlfriends, and mistresses of the rich can and will get abortions simply by jetting to Canada or someplace else and are able to get a safe legal abortion while people without the means to do so can't?

What will they think when their wife, girlfriend or daughter is raped and gets pregnant but the state will not allow her to abort the fetus?

What then?

1. I guess they will be wishing they paid attention....
But of course it will be too late. In that case, I reserve the right to "I told you so" every single one of their ignorant asses.

2. That's why I hope the Dems at least ATTEMPT a filibuster
We need a thorough debate of Scalito's positions on all issues -- and we need the (EXPLETIVE DELETED) media to focus on it so that these know-nothings can FINALLY wake up to what this guy stands for (and against). If the (EXPLETIVE DELETED) media would do their job, many of these know-nothings would be up in arms and perhaps communicating their disapproval to their representatives.

3. LIfe from CONCEPTION on
just wait until they take away their BIRTH CONTROL PILLS too, which cause "chemical abortions." They will wake up when it is too late, because they aren't paying ATTENTION. They have no clue how extreme this religious nuts are. I say that as someone who spent 12 years in Catholic School. I KNOW.

8. so will a miscarriage suddenly become murder?
And...will we go back 2000 years and accuse a man who masturbates of committing murder, since the belief was that he carried the babies in his semen?

12. Could be -- once a fetus is given rights as a citizen
under the Constitution -- something Chimpy alluded to just today, in fact -- then the government has a huge "interest" in a woman's womb. Poor prenatal care or behavior could be considered criminal negligence.

14. Does that mean Hallmark is bringing out "Conception Day" cards?
I would love to see someone try to get into a bar nine months before their 21st birthday claiming that because life starts at conception, they should be legal to drink.

Bet you they'd toss that 20 YEAR OLD out on their ass.

4. Not paying attention...
in 87% of U.S. counties, there is no place to get an abortion. It may already be too late.

5. It'll all go down to states rights
Which means if you haven't gotten involved in your own state laws in regards to choice now is a good time to volunteer for your local Planned Parenthood chapter.

In Delaware we are very pro-choice and democrats look strong for the next several elections

7. If Roe is overturned
it goes back to the states. States like California, NY, MA, VT, OR and others would remain pro-choice. Nothing would change. Other states would enact greater restrictions. Still others would ban it completely. You're correct about the rich being able to obtain safe abortions, so too would the middle class. It's the poor and uneducated in those states that further restrict and ban, who will suffer. In addition, bad as this scenario is, we will not go back to the days of wire hangers. In many countries in South America where abortion is illegal, most early term abortions are performed with the use of a common ulcer medication. Evidently it's quite safe.

I'm not saying that overturning Roe won't be devastating, just that it won't be as devastating as you make out. I argued yesterday, in a post, that overturning Roe might be better than the alternative, which is leaving Roe standing, but gutting it of any meaningful access.

9. What is that common ulcer medicine??? We all have to know this
so that we can spread the word to help those who need it....

And I still want a "rescue" set up. NARAL wants money, so why don't the spend it on transporting and paying for those who need the help?? That goes for NOW as well...

15. oh, this is well known ...I was hoping there was something that
was non-prescription so that women could have access to it.

I think there has to be a movement to hoard birth control pills which can be used to effectively create a "Plan B" morning after type of recourse...

10. If Roe is overturned -- then the GOP will all become democrats?
This seems to be what the spineless democrats seem to believe.

11. And what happens after they strip women of their rights-who's next?
will they outlaw homosexuality? Make Christianity the "official" religion of the US ? Ban affirmative action and endorse outright racism? They've already equated environmentalists with Al Qaeda..who will follow?

Before you say "don't be ridiculous" think back to 2000-could we have imagined how "ridiculous" America is today?
