"At least I tried" to get Osama bin Laden and shut down al-Qaeda, former president Bill Clinton tells Chris Wallace in a fiery interview taped today, portions of which are airing tonight and which will run in its entirety this weekend on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace (check your local listings).

Clinton says that "they" -- referring to the current Bush administration -- "had eight months to try, they did not try. I tried."

Thanks to Fox News, we've got a transcript of what appears to be the feistiest part of the showdown (click "read more" to see what we're talking about). The Clinton-Wallace encounter gets downright explosive at moments, as the two start interrupting each other and Clinton takes great umbrage at Wallace's questions -- which start with "why didn't you connect the dots and put him (bin Laden) out of business?"

6. Think about this: Chris Wallace did not go in this direction because he's

a stooge for Rove, but because the program is there to cater to FOX VIEWERS. FOX VIEWERS want to see this, and Fox's ratings have been down year to year by some 20-25%.

Why in the world would Fox want to talk about the good that Clinton has done today, raising $7bil for helping the world? Are you kidding? Of course they will want to rip into him for bin Laden! That's what the mini-series was for, and that's what the interview is for. Not for us and not for independents - to appeal to the neoconservatives in our country.
