When calling Republican Senators.....
Tell them you believe they are concerned about preserving the prerogatives of the Senate. Tell them you believe that Justice Alito would give the President's "signing statements" the force of law, (like he did when he signed the torture legislation) and that than seriously compromises the Checks and Balances preserved for us in the Constitution.

Tell them you hate to see the Senate be rendered irrelevant, and that you'd like to see them vote against his confirmation.

(and be nice)

1. Very good ideas - I have been emailing Senators at Senate.gov
and mostly skipping the Repugs because I didn't know what to say but several Repugs seem like they may be on board.

2. Good suggestions. Be sure and call the Repubs. Ask them not to
nuke a 200 year old tradition. Tell them it might "look bad" with all the accusations of bending the rules, abuse of power and corruption going around.

the so-called mainstream media will spell this out for folks. Most people seem to have no clue how scary this stuff is.

10. I agree
Instead on focusing on Roe v Wade I went more along the lines of presidential powers and the spying ordeal. My senator is Frist and he has two sons so I asked how he would like it if they were spied upon. I'm not going to hold my breath though but it's a good idea for other republican senators who are on the fence. I remember reading here on DU that republicans wanted to get away from Bush's extremes (election year and all) and they will support a filibuster if the democrats lead the charge.

19. Particularly when calling McCain...
remind the aide that the President (I don't use his name when calling Repubs..because I'm afraid my contempt will become too evident),, added a "signing statement" to the anti-torture legislation that was passed so overwhelmingly..

as if to say .."OK, it's Law.... but not for me" thereby bypassing the will of Congress.
