Husbands response to right-wing email chain
So my sister in law sends me and others this stupid email -

_________

How ironic is this??!! They don't even believe in Christ and they're
getting their own Christmas stamp, but don't dream of posting the ten
commandments on federal property!?!

USPS New Stamp

This one is impossible to believe. Scroll down for the text. If there is
only one thing you forward today.....let it be this!

REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of PanAm Flight 103!

REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993!

REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the Marine barracks in Lebanon!

REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the military barracks in Saudi Arabia!

REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the American Embassies in Africa!

REMEMBER the MUSLIM bombing of the USS COLE!

REMEMBER the MUSLIM attack on the Twin Towers on 9/11/2001!

REMEMBER all the AMERICAN lives that were lost in those vicious MUSLIM
attacks!

Now the United States Postal Service REMEMBERS and HONORS the EID MUSLIM
holiday season with a commemorative first class holiday postage stamp.

REMEMBER to adamantly and vocally BOYCOTT this stamp when purchasing your
stamps at the post office.
To use this stamp would be a slap in the face to all those AMERICANS who
died at the hands of those whom this stamp honors.

REMEMBER to pass this along to every patriotic AMERICAN you know

__________

HERE IS MY HUSBANDS RESPOSE and he emailed it to everyone she sent that stupid email to ....

__________

OK, I'll boycott the Muslim stamp. But in order to be consistent with the logic of attaching blame to an entire group rather than the lunatic fringe nutcases within that group who are personally responsible for such despicable actions, I guess I'd better expand my boycott:

REMEMBER the CHRISTIAN abortion clinic bombings and child molesting clergymen! Well, now I guess I gotta boycott Christmas, too!

REMEMBER the BLACK crack dealing gangsta thugs! Throw Bill Cosby, Oprah, and Colin Powell in jail with the rest of 'em!

REMEMBER the WHITE guy who bombed Oklahoma City! Hey, I'm white too! Uh oh...

REMEMBER the GERMANS who started World War 2 and gassed six million Jews! Shit! And to think I liked beer and bratwurst!

REMEMBER the REPUBLICAN presidents who brought us Watergate, Iraq, and runaway deficits! OK, so I'll vote for the Democrats...

REMEMBER the DEMOCRATIC presidents who dropped nukes on Japan, escalated Vietnam, and got blowjobs in the Oval Office! Well then, to hell with all of them! I guess I'll just focus on getting rich.

REMEMBER that GEORGE WASHINGTON owned slaves. Time to boycott the dollar, folks!

The bottom line is that every religion, culture, race, and nation has things to not be very proud of. Don't be so easily tempted to condemn the whole bunch, because it's a slippery path to becoming a bitter, hate-filled bigot who thinks the whole world is out to get them

5. that is great!
I had a local freeper tell me in detail essentially how "all Muslims need to die because they are all trying to kill us." I don't think he got the irony of it, so I spelled it out for him, but still no response...

my answer to him:
right. so according to you, what makes US different from THEM is that THEY (fundamentally, and for no reason at all...) want to kill US all, so to prevent that WE need to kill all of THEM first. right.

wow.

It all makes sense to me now!

7. I've got a theory about these chain e-mails...
If I saw some angry, illiterate moron shouting at the postal clerk about the stamp that commemorates "the EID MUSLIM holiday season," I'd laugh my ass off.

Makes me wonder whether these e-mails are hoaxes concocted by reasonable people who just like to see freepers foam at the mouth.

19. Not to mention the fact that there's a Christmas stamp every year
and has been since the early 1960s. The years that I have noticed, it has come in two versions, a generic "holiday" version and a Christmas version that usually shows a Nativity scene or Madonna and Child by a famous artist.

36. Here is an image of the Madonna and Child christmas stamp
Christmas: Chacón Madonna and Child with Bird
For the Holidays, the "Christmas: Chacón Madonna and Child with Bird," stamp features an oil-on-canvas with gold details. Dating from around 1765, the painting is attributed to Ignacio Chacón — an artist active from 1745 to 1775 in Cuzco, Peru. It is now part of the Engracia and Frank Barrows Freyer Collection of Peruvian colonial art at the Denver Art Museum.

O'Reilly falsely claimed that "spiritual" Christmas stamps are no longer being offered
Summary: On The Radio Factor, host Bill O'Reilly falsely claimed that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) no longer offers Christmas postage stamps with a "spiritual" theme. In fact, the USPS continues to offer the commemorative "Madonna and Child" stamp.
Bill O'Reilly falsely claimed that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) no longer offers Christmas postage stamps with a "spiritual" theme. On the December 9 edition of his nationally syndicated radio program, a caller asserted that "I was politely told by all the postal workers that I spoke with at the various post offices that the only stamp they offered was 'Holiday Cookies.' " O'Reilly replied, "I think it's the first time in my lifetime that the United States Postal Service has not had a spiritual stamp for people like you who would like them," adding that the purported lack of a spiritual stamp was "insulting you and your beliefs ... because your spiritual stamp is in context to the celebration of Christmas."

In fact, in addition to the "Holiday Cookies" stamps the caller cited, the USPS continues to offer the commemorative "Madonna and Child" stamp. The self-adhesive 37-cent "Madonna and Child" is available through the USPS website in individual books of 20, or in larger packs containing five books each. A December 2 article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about "the Internet and public conversation awash with horror that no new religiously themed stamp was printed for the 2005 season" quoted Diana Svoboda, a spokeswoman for the USPS' Pittsburgh district, stating that reports of the Postal Service planning to discontinue religiously themed Christmas stamps were "absolutely not true." The Post-Gazette article went on to report that although a new design is typically chosen for the "Madonna and Child" every year, this year USPS opted not to print a new design, due to an overstock of 37-cent "Madonna and Child" stamps left over from the previous Christmas season. USPS is increasing the price of first-class stamps to 39 cents on January 8, and "he Postal Service ... didn't want a fresh crop of outdated stamps sitting in the drawers for next year," the Post-Gazette reported.
From the December 9 broadcast of Westwood One's The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly:
CALLER: I'm calling about -- I like to send Christmas cards. And every year I try and send cards with United States Post Office Christmas stamps on them that say Christmas or something with the infant and child, Mary, something that says something about Christ.
O'REILLY: Right.
CALLER: And this year, I was very surprised when I was politely told by all the postal workers that I spoke with at the various post offices that the only stamp they offered was "Holiday Cookies" saying nothing on it.
O'REILLY: I know this is, I think, the first time ever, right, ?
CALLER: It's the first time I remember, Mr. O'Reilly.
O'REILLY: Yeah. I think it's the first time in my lifetime that the United States Postal Service has not had a spiritual stamp for people like you who would like them. And, again, disrespectful. Flat-out disrespectful, insulting you and your beliefs, , because your spiritual stamp is in context to the celebration of Christmas. And we gotta stop that, and we will.

The EID postage stamp described above was introduced by the United States Postal Service (at the then-current 34-cent rate) as part of their Holiday Celebrations Series on 1 September 2001, just ten days before the September 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. The EID stamp was reissued by the USPS in October 2002 at the newer 37-cent first class rate. (The USPS told us they plan to reissue the EID stamp again in a 39-cent denomination on 6 October 2006.)

The EID stamp is often mischaracterized as a "Christmas stamp" even though it has nothing to do with Christmas other than that it is part of a series of U.S. postage stamps commemorating several diverse celebrations (Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Thanksgiving) which sometimes occur at roughly the same time of year. (The Holiday Celebrations Series of stamps also commemorates celebrations occurring at distinctly different times of the year, such as Cinco de Mayo.) The statement " don't even believe in Christ and they're getting their own Christmas stamp!" is nonsensical, akin to protesting Hanukkah stamps because "Jews don't even believe in Christ but they have their own Christmas stamp."

As the USPS describes the EID stamp:
The Eid stamp commemorates the two most important festivals — or eids — in the Islamic calendar: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. On these days, Muslims wish each other "Eid mubarak," the phrase featured in Islamic calligraphy on the stamp. "Eid mubarak" translates literally as "blessed festival," and can be paraphrased as "May your religious holiday be blessed." This phrase can be applied to both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

The word "eid" is roughly equivalent to the English word "celebration" or "festival." The three-day Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of the month-long fasting of Ramadan; the three-day Eid al-Adha commemorates the willingness of the Prophet Abraham to sacrifice his son Ishmael in response to God's command*, and it marks the end of Hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

Should Americans boycott a stamp commemorating Islamic holidays? That's a personal decision, but the following facts may prove informative:

The EID stamp is an ordinary first-class postage stamp; all proceeds from its sale go to the USPS, not to any Muslim-related groups or organizations. Boycotting the EID stamp is a purely symbolic act with no financial impact on anyone.

The Muslim population in the United States is estimated as being somewhere between two to six million, and according to the U.S. State Department, by the year 2010 the Muslim population of the United States is expected to surpass the Jewish population, making Islam the country's second-largest faith.
The USPS already issues stamps commemorating the Christian holiday of Christmas (with both religious and festive themes) and the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah as well as Kwanzaa.

The American greeting card manufacturer Hallmark produces a variety of holiday cards celebrating Eid al-Fitr.

The President of the United States, George W. Bush, has extended official greetings, issued messages, and participated in commemorations of both Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha (even after the September 11 attacks), and the White House web site promotes the EID stamp as well.

44. And My Sister
My three sisters are also rabid republicans and believe any and everything rush spews. I got an email from one of them about the ACLU starting a war this early on Christmas. Damn I missed that one.

I googled and I googled, I went to altva vista, and all the others but guess what I could find absolutely nothing, nada, zilch, Zero about the ACLU starting a war on Christmas. Guess I missed it folks it was there??and then it was gone.

I also got one about Denzil Washington because he wrote a check to one of the Veterans Hospitals. And was panning Sean Penn, George Clooney and the LIBERAL hollywood types who could have written a check also. And what did they do. Nothing against Denzil Washington, writing that check was commendable, but I wonder how this hate group missed all the fund raisers, concerts and other things these people do to help the poor.

I just delete her emails unread now.

47. One question...
A question for everyone.

Of the people on that excellent list (leaving out the Thiry Years war to make it easier), how may could be said to possess conservative attitudes or values?

48. What an odious load...
of racist horseshit.
I just love how they have to emphasize MUSLIM.
Remember the MUSLIM lives lost when we bombed Afghanistan and Iraq.
How many?
A hell of a lot more than the number of Americans killed by Muslim terrorists, I'd wager =)

49. Your sister in law probably didn't even originally write that
most right wingers just parrot the same old tired crap without thinking about it logically, and are usually too lazy to do a fact check to see if its true. The truthiness of the message is all that matters to them.

51. You would be correct
The stamp and the chain letter came out in 2001.

A good analysis of the letter here:

52. the chain mail itself is about 4 years old
I imagine this particular chain mail is being seen again because of the upcoming elections. Stirring up the base.

I can't count the number of times I've linked snopes/urban legend links to a sender of these right-wing freeperish chain mails. Seem some people believe anything without verifying the details, a sad commentary on our fellow-citizens.

this stamp chain mail apparently originated in
2002 according to snopes

http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/eidstamp.asp

are there any chain mails out there promoting anything other than rightwing fundamentalist Limbaughish type propaganda and hate? things promoting social progress in the country? pro-democratic, good-will common good messages? I can't say I've seen one.

If it's not a chain mail breaking down the separation of church and state it's a fraudulent Andy Rooney commentary.

from break the chain:

Created 12/20/2002, updated 12/8/2004 (12/8/2004) One large problem with so-called "boycott" chain letters is that their authors usually aren't so much interested in a boycott as they are to spread a message. That's why most of these boycotts are utterly ineffective - after all, how could you boycott something that you weren't going to buy in the first place? This chain carries a theme that resonates with many Americans, but what does it really seek to accomplish?

http://www.breakthechain.org/exclusives/muslimstamp.html

the stamp was originally issued just days before the September 11, 2001

60. The frivolus lawsuit chain E-mail was debunked by snopes
but the damage was already done. People said, "damn lawyers will take any case." But all the ones they listed were made up. It was like a quiet cynicism grenade lobbed into a crowded area. The only response you could have was to hate lawyers...

Which makes me wonder why their aren't left wing ones about:

Doctor screw ups that didn't happen.

Stories about insurance companies refusing to pay claims for sensible things.

The bush aministrations role in denying a dying soldier's desire to see his new born child.

etc.

Some think Roosevelt dropped A-bomb on Japan, poll says
Most Americans don't know that Harry Truman was President when the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Japan, but that's not all they don't know, according to a recent survey. Many are also ignorant of other facts about Hiroshima, and the youngest are most ignorant. Only 40 percent of Americans surveyed in the Gallup poll identified Truman as the President who ordered the bombing. Twelve percent thought it was Franklin Roosevelt, seven percent thought it was Dwight Eisenhower, two percent picked John F. Kennedy, and one percent believed Nixon gave the order. Twenty-five percent of the men and 44 percent of the women polled didn't know Hiroshima was the first target of the atomic bomb.

73. I got the same e-mail a while ago, here's what I wrote:
GREAT RESPONSE!

I got the same e-mail a while ago, here's what I wrote:

Not to be difficult or anything, but all of those bombings, though carried out by people of Muslim faith (albeit with a rather twisted understanding of it), were not MUSLIM bombings. They were al-quaeda bombings. The men who killed Emmitt Till by beating him senseless, tying a hunk of concrete to him, and throwing him in a swamp were Baptists, but that doesn’t make it a BAPTIST murder, does it? Was Christ’s death on the cross a JEWISH crucifixion because he was put to death by men who happened to be Jewish? Should we now boycott anything that honors the Jewish holy feasts such as Hanukah or Rosh Hashana, or perhaps boycott everything Jewish (good luck with that)? Christ was not sacrificed by Jews but by all of mankind and their sins. (at least that’s how I understand it). Christ died to redeem HUMANITY, not just us Christian White Folk. But thanks for the heads-up on this. Come to think of it, I will proudly mail all of my Christmas correspondence with one of these stamps. Tolerance and understanding of people’s differences is what once made this country great. It is a shame that our greatness has faded, especially in the eyes of our former friends and allies worldwide, because of a lack of that kind of understanding. It seems that the United States of America, once regarded as the great peacemaker, is now perceived as something much less than that.

Peace to all, on every holy day of every faith. May you always strive for the understanding and compassion that come from being a true follower of Christ’s teachings. I recommend the Beatitudes for a quick encapsulation of His message.

If you're running this client or another one that will read your mail for you and plonk the crap automatically, and you tell it to delete all messages that contain "pass this along to," you'll NEVER be able to start a thread like this one.
