Of course, churches and politics don't mix, but the analogy is too good to pass up. This is for those that think Lieberman should keep his plum committee assignments. I once belonged to a Church of Christ. For those of you who aren't familiar with COC, it is a very strict type of congregation. Very austere. Very confining. So there was a branch of us more liberal churchgoers who got tired of paying for the trappings of an affluent lifestyle for the pastor and decided to go out on our own. Our congregation split. We went one way without any money or resources other than ourselves. We built a church--still under the COC name, however, a splinter sect nonetheless. Since most of our money had gone to fund the egregiously affluent lifestyle of one man and his family, we had to start from the ground up. Even though OUR money had paid for the church remodel and even though our money had gone to pay the utilities and the upkeep necessary. So, our little church was formed. We didn't have anywhere to go. But eventually we raised the funds and built a sanctuary. Everything we did we paid for. It was ours. We didn't hire a pastor because it too easily becomes nothing more than a cash cow when the church becomes successful. Instead, we voted in 5 elders. These elders were very educated men...one was a teacher, one was a Professor at a local college, a couple were doctors and one was a businessman. These men took turns giving the sermons, so every week, church was new and exciting and a different viewpoint. Anyway, the point of the story is, even though our money and efforts went in to support our church, when we made the decision to leave, we left. We had no rights to say--well we are leaving the church, but since we paid for the upkeep, we want to hold our church services here. It doesn't work that way. When you leave, you leave. No matter what you did before, when you sever the ties that bind, you are on your own. Let Joe run as an Independent. That IS his perogative. But just understand, the trappings of being a Democrat are what you leave behind.
