"Freedom of speech is good until it gets out of whack."
An actual quote from an actual Bush supporter at the Sheehan camp. WOW!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060807/ap_on_re_us/peace_mom

Snip <William McGlothlin of Marked Tree, Ark., said he was visiting his son in College Station and decided to try to see Bush's ranch, then stopped by the protesters' site because he had heard about them and was angry.

"I believe Bush is doing what he should be doing," McGlothlin said. "Freedom of speech is good until it gets out of whack."

Several Bush supporters also set up a tent Sunday in downtown Crawford, which they have done every time Sheehan has returned.

Sheehan said she expected more war opponents to arrive throughout the month. Their protest initially was to start Aug. 16, after the Veterans for Peace convention in Seattle, but she moved it up last week after learning that Bush would be in Crawford for only 10 days at the beginning of August.>Snip

This is batshit crazy people! This guy's the only thing out of whack! Geez.

1. Freedom Of Speech Is Terribly Out of Whack In US
Thanks to the corporatists and the GOP party organs. Only on the Internet can dissent get a word in edgewise.

14. we have greater freedom of speech
in the USA than England, Canada, France, the UK, Germany, etc.

that's because (among other things) we don't criminalize so called "hate speech", holocaust denial, etc. many countries, for instance criminalize "vilification of religion"

a society that truly values free speech has to make a commitment to defend the right to say "the indefensible"

4. These clowns seem to lack the ability to follow their arguments...
...to their logical conclusions. Who decides what qualifies as 'out of whack?' One man's out of whack is another's decidedly in whack. That's why we have freedom of speech in the first place. If everyone agreed with eachother, we wouldn't need to protect speech because nobody would ever say anying objectionable or controversial. It is precisely the 'out of whack' that freedom of speech most strongly protects.

5. Tony Snow bothers me more, here:
"White House spokesman Tony Snow has said that neither Bush nor his staff plan to meet with Sheehan.

"I would advise her to bring water, Gatorade or both," Snow said when asked about Sheehan during a press briefing Friday. "Honestly, when you're talking about the kind of issues that we're talking about, Cindy Sheehan hasn't risen to the level of staff meetings at this point."......

11. I think I make this remark every time I read about Tony Snow:
It takes a hell of a lot for a person who overcame cancer to not be able to get any sympathy points. Way to go, Tony Snow, professional douchebag!!

7. What's really scary is...
that a full 29% of the population think like this. They have the authoritarian mindset - believing that they must follow Dear Leader no matter where he goes, suppressing all dissent as unpatriotic and seditious. They will follow him blindly as he goes over the cliff.

That's why this fall's election is so important. We need checks and balances back in the system, or that 29% of the population will dominate.

8. Translation:
"I will respect and defend your right to freedom of speech until you say something I don't want to hear. Then I'll try to make you shut up."
Soon to add "...by any means necessary" if things keep spiraling downward.

9. You can't really debate these people
because they tend to start yelling and interrupting when things start to go bad in a discussion, usually about two or three minutes into discussion. I can yell with the best of them, but would prefer not to as it accomplishes very little. So the hell with 'em. See how much they cry whenever their right to free speech is taken away.

10. Out of whack - like relegated to "free speech zones" or at your own risk
because if you say that the SS might show up at your door and ask to see the files on your computer, or being tossed in jail for heckling the first lady - that kind of out of whack? This is the kind of notion that sparks revolutions, children, blind followers should have paid more attention in history class.
