Program pays addicts to use birth control
Critics of the group call the $300 payments coercive and the nationwide effort racist.
By JOHN SHULTZ
The Kansas City Star

From where Barbara Harris sits, drug addicts give up a lot of things. Procreation should be one of them.

The founder and driving force behind the controversial Project Prevention is on a 5,000-mile road trip to bring the group’s distinctive offer to the nation’s drug users: Get on long-term birth control. Maybe get sterilized. Either way, get $300 from her group.

“People say we don’t have a right to tell them how many children they can have,” Harris said Tuesday as she coaxed the nonprofit group’s lumbering RV through the narrow side streets off Prospect Avenue. “I disagree.”

Her inspiration: four children she adopted, one after the other, after they were born in successive years to a drug-addicted mother.

“My children didn’t deserve to be given drugs for nine months,” Harris said. “No innocent child deserves that.”

Critics worry that the program is racist, disproportionately focusing on minority women, and preys on people ill-prepared to make life-altering decisions, or those easily swayed by an offer of fast cash.

<<<<<snip>>>>>>

Harris likens her cause to that of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, arguing that no one would take issue with paying alcoholics to forgo driving.

“Drunk drivers have innocent victims; these women do, too,” she said.

“I want to be a household name like MADD.”

Funding comes from private donors, including conservative mogul Richard Scaife and Houston venture capitalist Jim Woodhill

I don't have problem with offering drug-addicts some form of long-term birth control (like those implants you could get that last for 5 years). But I'm a bit challenged that we're bribing people to make these decisions and why the hell would you even CONSIDER offering sterlization as an option. That's just wrong!

1. This is hysterically ironic
This is the exact same reason liberals support the federal govt paying for birth control and yes, sterilization. So that women who really don't want to have children have a means to stop it. Of course, liberals also support providing plenty of treatment for the drug abuser too.

The difference is the attitude. This woman does it in a mean-spirited way, as a sort of punishment, and doesn't care a whit about treatment or the lives of the women.

2. Have you ever read this?
Bush and Draper

Twenty years before he was U.S. President, George Bush brought two `` race-science '' professors in front of the Republican Task Force on Earth Resources and Population. As chairman of the Task Force, then-Congressman Bush invited Professors William Shockley and Arthur Jensen to explain to the committee how allegedly runaway birth-rates for African-Americans were `` down-breeding '' the American population.

Afterwards Bush personally summed up for the Congress the testimony his black-inferiority advocates had given to the Task Force.@s2@s2 George Bush held his hearings on the threat posed by black babies on August 5, 1969, while much of the world was in a better frame of mind--celebrating mankind's progress from the first moon landing 16 days earlier. Bush's obsessive thinking on this subject was guided by his family's friend, Gen. William H. Draper, Jr., the founder and chairman of the Population Crisis Committee, and vice chairman of the Planned Parenthood Federation. Draper had long been steering U.S. public discussion about the so-called `` population bomb '' in the non-white areas of the world.

If Congressman Bush had explained to his colleagues how his family had come to know General Draper, they would perhaps have felt some alarm, or even panic, and paid more healthy attention to Bush's presentation. Unfortunately, the Draper-Bush population doctrine is now official U.S. foreign policy.

William H. Draper, Jr. had joined the Bush team in 1927, when he was hired by Dillon Read & Co., New York investment bankers. Draper was put into a new job slot at the firm: handling the Thyssen account. Much More...
