What would President Mark Warner fight for?
Maybe some of our friends from Virginia could help. It looks like he would fight for a balanced budget. Would he also fight for progressive taxation? Would he fight to keep our jobs right here in the USA? Would he want to end illegal immigration? Would he seek to extend affordable healthcare to all Americans? What would he do to improve education? Would he push hard for alternative energy? I’m a bit fuzzy on who this guy is. I like him already in a lot of ways because he looks highly electable, but that alone is not a good reason to nominate someone.

(yes, I know it’s only 2006, but it’s never to early to get informed on the issues)

1. I believe he would work for all of those things...
What you won't see however, is some sweeping program to try and solve them all at once. He is expert at working within the political process...and under Warner you would see progress on these fronts incrementally.

7. That is probably a good approach
when you are dealing with the bullheads the repubs have in congress. Although it will be disappointing for some here, myself possibly included.

2. Don't know, but he'd look like "the guy with the sun shining on his face"
and that's all that really matters

12. Ya think?

Considering his last "fundraiser" was attended by half of Great Falls, VA, an incredibly wealthy town in noVA, and that a good many of the guests in attendance were Republican?

Thank you, leftchick, for not falling for the silliness that Warner is some type of second coming.

If he runs any harder to the center his shoes will catch on fire.

edit: I live in northern Virginia.

Let me tell you about life in today's Washington.

In today's Washington, a fiscal conservative is someone who thinks the deficits can go on forever. He thinks that you can make the cost of the war go away by using Enronesque budgeting tactics of simply taking the costs off the balance sheet.

In today's Washington, politicians work deep into the night to try to write laws to interfere with the family of Terry Schiavo and ignore the fact that there are 45 million Americans with no health care at all.

... blah blah BLAH! :puke:

4. Considering he couldn't find it in himself to say NSA wiretaps are illegal
what difference would he make?

5. NSA wiretaps aren't illegal
they are illegal without a warrant after 72 hours, although I assume that's what you meant. It makes alot of difference. You're not going to agree on every issue with any candidate and besides, that doesn't mean he supports illegal NSA wiretaps. It could easily mean that for whatever reason, Mark doesn't want to be out in front on an issue that he feels is not advantageous for him to talk about and that he can do very little about anyway.

18. NSA wiretaps are indeed illegal
without a search warrant, which, in case you haven't been listening, is what this Totalitarian Administration is doing.

He had a chance to take the lead on an issue that can't die because the courts will not let it die, and he failed miserably.

8. I am sorry but you could not be more wrong
The ONLY REASON TO NOMINATE SOMEONE IS THAT THEY ARE HIGHLY ELECTABLE.

It is far more important that we sieze power then die on the altar of some isolated principle that appeals to no more than 20% of the elecorotate and on only 20 percent of the people who actually vote.

I don't care if a guy is DNC, DLC or Repblican-lite. He or She is going to have to govern in the middle anyway. What is essential is that we drive from the public square the Neo-Cons and then the Fundie Whackos.

Everything else is jus genuflection towards narrow agendas.

9. Narrow agendas like preserving the Middle Class and Democracy?
Sorry but the problem is much bigger and more basic than the clique of right-wing fundies and neo-Cons.

They are in control because there has been a serious deficit in politics for several decades of an opposition that actually fights for the rights of workers and the disadvantaged and the basic concepts of democracy and economic justice.

We will never correct that situation -- or even achieve meaningful political power -- by continuing to offer a milder version of the same poison of right-wing economics and ideology as the GOP.

10. In that case, we should nominate John McCain
He would win with about 80% of the vote running as a democrat.

15. What do the polls say this week?
I don't mean to bash Warner, but this is the kind of question that should not even have to be asked. There's too many issues where that seems to be the case.

16. I use to live in VA
I have met Mark Warner, I have worked in his campaign for Senate and would have worked in his campaign for Governor EXCEPT he sucked up to the NRA for their endorsement and that is when I washed my hands of him. Now for those of you who know VA politics addressing the "gun" issue I understand is politically important - BUT actively seeking the NRA endorsement was way over the top. Mark is entirely too conservative for my tastes. His inability to take a stand on the WARRANT LESS NSA wiretapping on one of the Sunday morning shows was embarrassing. I was very pleased that he stayed the execution of a prisoner recently....but all in all he is not my cup of tea.
