Hit the road, Jack: Mancow FIRED by Q101
Even before morning man Erich "Mancow" Muller got his walking papers Tuesday from WKQX-FM 101.1, the idea of being a "shock jock" was an anachronism.

From Howard Stern on down, the most jarring radio personalities have long rejected the description. It just doesn't sell the way it once did.

Advertisers are wary. The Federal Communications Commission has become aggressive. And audiences, well, they've heard it all before.

"You can't do anything on the radio that's really dirty because the FCC will fine the hell out of ... but on a deeper level, what's shocking in our society these days?" said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers magazine, a trade publication. "Look at the Internet. Look at billboards. Look at movies. Look at cable television. It's crazy to label yourself a shock jock. ... You've got to be funny. You've got to be creative. You've got to be intelligent. You've got to be entertaining. But shocking? There's nothing shocking anymore."

Good riddance to the right-wing thug. He was funny as a crutch.

3. I'm not big on the "zoo"-style morning shows...the one or two
main hosts, the giggly girl who does the promos, the man with a (usually fake) accent or speech impediment they all make fun of, the weather babe, the traffic babe, and fourteen people laughing at everything the main hosts say. Mancow's was one of the worst.

5. I didn't know he was right wing
He was still funny as a crutch. He wasn't even GOOD at what he did, for pity's sake.

8. Oh, he was COULTER level right-wing
For a while, he was on all the screamfests on cable, but he's such a moron they eventually dumped his ass. A poster child for backward baseball cap wearing creeps nationwide.

9. Oh, BTW, he was rated No. 11 among morning shows
This is the guy who used to imitate Stern and gloat over his ratings. Except, unlike Stern, he had no talent and his audience grew up while he didn't.

12. My memory of Mancow
When he was in junior high, my son one day told me of how that morning Mancow, then working in the Bay Area, decided to do a send-up of Clinton's airport haircut and get a haircut in a stopped minivan on the San Francisco Bay Bridge during the morning rush. This had the exact effect that Mancow desired: it caused a colossal traffic jam.

My son and his 13-year-old friends were listening to this on the radio on a bus on the way to school. They thought this was very funny. I told him that when he gets his drivers license and has to sit in traffic like that two or three times he might have a different perspective. I also told him that it was bad enough when one sits on the Bay Bridge because a truck jack knifed or spilled some toxic substance on the road (this had happened to me a few years earlier), but the idea of a morning DJ playing a practical joke on the general public just to make a point (not to mention ratings points) was not funny.

Mancow was soon let go by the station for which he worked at the time; however, his little stunt worked in a way. After all, he keeps working in radio for reasons otherwise unknown to me.
