New Report: "I Think The Torture & Abuse Will Shock Congress & Americans"
Report: US 'systematically' violates Geneva, Supreme Court

RAW STORY
Published: Monday July 10, 2006

Documents declassified by the Pentagon to a civil liberties organization show that inmates at Guantanamo Bay have been "systematically tortured," RAW STORY has learned.

The Center on Constitutional Rights' 51-page "Report on Torture and Cruel, Inhuman, and Degrading Treatment of Prisoners at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba" is drawn from primary accounts given by current detainees and their American attorneys at the Guantánamo Bay prison.

According to the report, several accounts indicate that physical, psychological, sexual and religious abuse is commonplace at the prison. Many incidents catalogued by attorneys would be in violation of the Geneva convention, and as such, also in violation of the Court's ruling.

"I think the torture and abuse detailed here will shock Congress and the American public," said CCR Legal Director Bill Goodman, "because it reveals a lawless, immoral and ineffective detention facility and undermines the administration's increasingly desperate attempts to lie about what is happening down there."

1. here's the part i can't figure out -- why? why would this
shock anybody.

we wanted blood with impunity after 9-11.

bushco didn't allow the country real reflection.

now the senators and represenatives -- puff themselves up -- and behave in the most self-righteously indignant manner.

adding insult to injury for my money -- and vote.

america can take shallow and self absorbed to absurd new levels.

21. Less then what? 30-40 Percent?
When you close-in on 7 out of 10 Americans NOT for Bushco, I say we don't need to know, we deserve to know the truth.

After 9/11 nothing should shock us anymore. And if it does, maybe that's what we need to awaken many from the lying talking news-heads.

10. fat chance. Not with the current leadership.
As for the public, it depends on what version of truth they hear. If it is Faux Gnus' version, Sean and Bill will be complaining that we pamper those evil-doers on a tropical island. (I believe more than one senator also stated that spin) If a real report gets out, say in the NYT or LA Times, watch the reactionary right accuse them of endangering national security because our "inquisition" techniques are top secret.

If your regional daily reports on this, then I think the US Public will be shocked and angry. I trust them to understand just how bad and short-sighted torture and abuse are.

17. My regional daily is the NYT
Some people knock it, but two years in NC made me (love, miss) appreciate this paper more than I can express. If all a person wants to hear is drumbeat propaganda, Faux is always available and local newspapers that aren't the NYT are likely as not to print a couple of pro-torture letters-to-the-editor a week. Disgusting.

3. Sadly, after five years of bushco, Americans cannot be shocked
any more. Much the same as Nazi Germany.

4. Of course it's shocking
Why do you think the corrupt Bush administration has fought so hard to keep the lid on this? They know exactly what they're doing, and so do most of the GOP leaders in Congress. Don't be fooled for a nanosecond that anyone in the GOP leadership is going to be "shocked, shocked I tell you!"

8. The congress ''acts'' shocked as some of the American
people, but in just a few days, it has all gone away. (1) The Ports thing with Dubai, (2) Guess no one cares about the airports at all (3) What happened to the Miami 7 we were so terrified by, (4) The telephone evesdropping shocked us, (5) the internet neutrality is on its way to shocking, (6) the mining data from everyones bank records are shocking, (7) the lies about the Plame outing and the WMDs and the swiftboating is unforgiveable and shocking ---that has been done to good people and just people, John McCain, John Kerry, Murtha, Joe Wilson, Richard Clarke, ,,,,my first to remember was Ann Richards in the governor race in Texas. Everyone (Anyone) is afraid to say anything against this government because they are thinking they will turn on them, and I think they would. I am shocked that the congress has not come forward and corrected this administration's misdeeds. Everyone wants to do something to stop it, but it is said that there is nothing that can be done, except through congress, using impeachment. Yes, every morning I am shocked about what the MSM is doing with the news. I am throughly shocked and sickened that this administration stole the presidential elections in 2000 and 2004 and are on track to do it again in 2006. The most horrific thing is not investigating the 911 incident and finding the truth out so that we would not appear so stupied as to believe 3 highrise buildings could be demolished as they were by two airplanes. (101) Startlingly, we are now hearing stories about Jeb for VP or P. I just can't stand much more of this and I know all of the country needs some relief.
I am not much of a poster, but i READ everything. This is the best I can do for a rant.

nowhere. They all begin to blend together in peoples minds. I guess we have to hope that the constant drumbeat of shocks will somehow eventually just translate into "We've HAD ENOUGH!!!" Oddly Newt Gingrich said that would be a great slogan for Dems but our Dems prefer things like "America..We Can do Better," according to an article Josh Marshall posted on his TPM site.

People might just have enough with "tuning out." If they don't ...I hate to think what will happen because like you so many of us are really OTT with what we can take in watching this stuff go down the Memory Hole. We might have to take a breather ourselves at some point. :-(

It's kind of hard to be a constant gardener or listening to CD's, watching Sports or playing Video Games,"24/7" with all this corrupution going on out there, though.

18. Most horrific
You said a mouthful there.I could not agree with you more when
it comes to 9/11.It appears that people just cannot embrace
the unimaginable horror of LIHOP..MIHOP.There are shocking
revelations weekly of crimes against humanity perpetrated by
this administration. It has repeatedly shown its disdain for
its own citizenry. The only thing keeping this from seeing
light of day is that we are in a state of denial. When any
thinking person explores the physics involved on 9/11,and the
sum total of lies about all of the atrocities committed by
this regime, its time to come to terms with the fact that
America's present state is not the place your parents told you
about.

19. We need to reframe the phrase "national security" as "cowardice."
Whenever a Republican brings up national security as a reason for doing something, accuse him/her of being terrified of the terrorists, and therefore of being in cahoots with them. Throw their methods back at them until they crumble (like they do whenever they're really fought) and crawl back under their rocks.

An example:

Republican: "We need to keep these photos classified because to show them to the public would endanger national security."
Us: "So you're afraid of what would happen if we saw them."
Republican: "I didn't say--"
Us: "Your cowardice disgusts me and all real Americans."
Republican: "I'm not a--"
Us: "Your fear of real debate and transparent government just shows your fear of the world. It shows that you're afraid we'll see you've done something wrong. Maybe you're really afraid of the terrorists, which means you're in league with them."
Republican: "Wait a min--"
Us: "You disgust me."

This, of course, would never happen - partly because no Republican would be civil for long enough for it to work. (But I can dream, right?)

7. Will Shock? I was shocked along time ago...could I be any more? The fact
that the majority of the American public and Congress haven't been "shocked" is shocking in itself to me!

Evangelicals have been saying our country is morally corrupt...I can actually agree with them, but for different reasons...

22. I couldn't agree more ~ I'm shocked at the lack of shock also
and that's even among people I know ~

Haditha
Katrina
Abramoff
Abu Ghraib
No WMDs
Plame
Domestic Spying
Cheney shooting a friend
Cunningham and the Defense Contractors
The price of oil
The immoral budget cuts
Fake Journalists in the WH press corps
Tom Delay indicted
Safavian convicted
Ken Lay convicted
Frist and Hastert under investigation ... and on and on!

Not to mention the cost of this war and the length of it considering what we were told 'weeks, months maybe' and 'no more than $40 Billion dollars'!

Now the rape and killing of that little girl and her family and the deaths of US troops. It's stunning to me that people are not outraged and demanding impeachment.

Otoh, the media is to blame ~ when they did their job regarding Katrina, there was outrage ~ it seems that people have to see this each day on their television screens, or it's not happening and they simply forget ~ and this administration knows it. People keep saying there will be a tipping point, but with each new scandal it just doesn't happen and Congress keeps quiet except for a few. I hope this will shock people, but I doubt it to be honest. It should that's for sure, but it won't imo.

13. They will be mildly upset until the next celebrity scandal hits the news.
What's the rape and murder of a young girl and her family compared to what Michael Jackson is wearing to the courthouse?

Or, the "shocking" news that some overly paid jock is beating his wife or ingesting buckets of drugs?
