Mass. lawmaker drops opposition to Fluff
LINK

A Massachusetts lawmaker is trying to get himself out of a sticky situation by dropping his opposition to Marshmallow Fluff. An amendment proposed by Sen. Jarrett Barrios to limit the availability of Fluff in schools sparked impassioned defense of the marshmallow spread, a lunch box staple of children for generations.

The proposal was panned on talk radio, and another lawmaker even suggested legislation to make the Fluffernutter — a Fluff and peanut butter sandwich — the official state sandwich.

Colin Durrant, spokesman for Barrios, D-Cambridge, said Barrios was abandoning the proposed amendment to the school nutrition bill. Barrios originally proposed the limitation after he learned his third-grade son was given a Fluffernutter as his school lunch.

"It got to the point where the larger story overshadowed or obscured his original goal, which was to have a discussion about what is a healthy and nutritious meal for kids in school," Durrant said Tuesday.

4. It's a New England thing, I reckon.
Fluffernutters have been served for generations up here. This lawmaker did happen to take on a popular "institution".

9. It's one of my memories from childhood
when I spent some time in New England. Fluffernutter was one of the food groups! We ate it in the school cafeteria. And loved it!

3. He just wanted to limit its use, not eliminate it
I think he wanted it limited to once a week. That such a limitation would cause a ruckus is outrageous. Kids are nothing but cogs to be used in the corporate machine.

5. I've never heard of this type of sandwich
I would be concerned, however, because of glycemic issues. Would children with blood sugar problems be served something else?

8. It's no worse than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Nothing better than a fluffnutter sandwich and a cold glass of milk

I had it as a kid and gave it to mine when they were kids.

Much a do about nuttin.

12. I love fluff!
Never realized it was mostly a new england thing. Momma used to make us fluffernutters for lunch, and we all turned out fine! Apparently the attack of fluff is THE burning issue for mass right now :eyes:
