Candidate for AZ governor calls for forced labor camps for illegals
My apologies if this has already been posted.

Is anyone surprised this suggestion comes from someone named Goldwater?

WASHINGTON (AP) - A Republican candidate for governor of Arizona's call for creation of a forced labour camp for illegal immigrants drew rebukes Friday from two Republican legislators, who labelled it a low point in the immigration debate.

Don Goldwater, nephew of the late U.S. senator Barry Goldwater, caused an international stir this week when EFE, a national news agency of Spain, quoted him saying he wants to hold undocumented immigrants in camps to use them "as labour in the construction of a wall and to clean the areas of the Arizona desert that they're polluting."

The article described Goldwater's plan as a concentration camp for migrants.

Goldwater, a candidate for governor in Arizona, said in a statement Friday his comments were taken out of context. He said he was calling for a work program for convicted non-violent felons, similar to "tried and tested, effective and accepted practices" used by state and local jails.

1. Yes
Barry Goldwater was a libertarian in philosophy. He'd have been a disastrous president, but I'd prefer 12 of him to 1 of the current crop. At least Goldwater had some principles.

3. The first thing I think of when I think of Barry Goldwater...
is his extremism in defense of liberty...quote. This nephew certainly seems to have the "extreme" part down pat.

You're probably right that Goldwater would have done a better job than GWB as president.

6. Ain't hard to do better than Numbnuts
I respect Goldwater for sticking to his individualistic creed. I find it unrealistic and overly romantic, but I can always respect consistency. Plus, it doesn't hurt that he had some nice, nasty things to say about the wingnut "Christians" before he died.

11. It's really depressing gto hear this windbag talk like this
I remember a 60 Minutes interview with the late Barry Goldwater in the 80's and I was impressed with a lot of what he said.

When he was asked how he felt about gays in the military, Goldwater said something to the effect of, "I don't see why this is an issue. If a man or woman wants to serve his orn her country nobody should care if they're gay or not."

On immigration, "Immigrants enhance our society. Our country is made up entirely of immigrants. Indians crossed over from Asia. White Americans from Europe. Blacks from Africa. Everyone that's here came from somewhere else. Who's to say who deserves to be here and who doesn't."

I remember those comments (although not word-for-word) because I expected a more intolerant position from Goldwater. I came away impressed,

My favorite Goldwater quote still comes from the O' Connor hearings when jerry 'teletubbies teach homosexuality' falwell said, "Every good christian should be concerned with the O' Connor nomination." And Goldwater said, "Every good Christian oughtta kick jerry falwell in the ass." I was 17 at the time and I laughed so loud when I heard that. It's still one of my favorite quotes.
The quote was true then and it's even more true today.

14. Thank you for posting this because...
it makes me look at Barry Goldwater in a whole new, more favorable light. I wonder what he would say about his relatives position on Mexican labor camps?

9. Michelle Malkin must be thrilled
since she's such a fan of internment camps.

With ALL his faults, and they were legion and serious, Barry Goldwater was like George Washington compared to the current occupant of the Oval Office.

10. To Goldwater, his plan has a twofold benefit:
1. Stem the tide of illegal immigration in his state, and
2. Break the back of the unions with free labor as opposed to less-than-minimum-wage allocations to undocumented workers.

16. I wonder if this is a new GOP talking point for the elections.
Look at this:

http://www.normantranscript.com/localnews/local_story_175004507?keyword=secondarystory

Evanoff's proposal would make it a felony to live in Oklahoma illegally. "If a person is here illegally they should be charged with a felony." And if they're convicted, Evanoff would place the immigrants in a state work camp for one to three years.

"I have no problem with legal immigrants. But if someone is here illegally, they should be imprisoned and forced to work for the state without pay."

.....

Evanoff says immigrants who are here illegally pay no taxes, yet use the state's hospitals and schools. "Their very presence shows a lack of regard for our laws and regulations and many refuse to learn or use our language."

Evanoff says his proposal would offset the costs of housing and feeding the immigrants. "We could follow other examples. The illegal aliens would be incarcerated on a work farm and live in tents. They would be fed bologna and peanut butter sandwiches and required to work. We could use their labor to offset the pay for the cost of holding them."

Maybe this is a national platform we're just now hearing about?
