To Do: Four Ways to Ignore or Irritate You-Know-Who
Despite the imminent arrival of you-know-who (more on which in a bit), there is plenty going on in BP tonight. Here are four ideas.
• "Rewind Summer" is back up and running at Mokka Cuka, which is far from where you-know-who is staying.
• There is a four-day festival going on at the Gödör Club, which is right across from the hotel where you-know-who is staying, and seems to be all about the kind of hippy-drippy folksy music that would probably drive him crazy.
• Something called "Garden Harp Music" is being offered tonight at Pótkulcs. Again, not sure what it is, but you're unlikely to run into you-know-who there, either.
• Finally, there's a giant ass football party down at the Városligeti Műlyégpálya. And by football, we mean football, not what you-know-who calls it. Peace.

The big day is finally upon us! In just a few short hours, Hungary will have the honor of hosting U.S. President George W. Bush. As this visit is so very important, we will skip our normally snide editorializing and just report the facts as they come into our desk, including the following:
The arrival of POTUS at roughly 20:00 at Ferihegy airport will involve the closure of all the roads between the airport and downtown from around 18:00 to 20:30 today, and between 17:00 and 18:00 tomorrow. This means that if you are planning on flying into or out of Budapest anytime between now and tomorrow evening, be sure to be there several hours early. Meanwhile, note that air space will be closed in a 50-kilometer radius around Budapest during his arrival and departure.
Meanwhile, according to origo.hu, the visit will force changes in the schedules and routs of several bus lines, somewhat fewer trams and even the metro. The Metro 1 line (the yellow line) is running only to Deák Ferenc tér today and tomorrow, and the M3 (the blue line) will end at Határ út, which is also the temporary terminus of several buses. The Airport Bus is not running. The Lánchíd (Chain Bridge) will be also be closed for parts of the visit.
Civilians for Peace (Civilek a Békéért) will stage a protest against Bush's visit on Szabadság tér tomorrow from 16:00. The event will feature concerts by Anima Sound System and Kaukázus, and will apparently take place while Bush is doing a big 1956-oriented photo op on nearby Kossuth tér, without the accompaniment of any notable Hungarian bands. Oops - editorializing! Sorry!
The President will be protected by about a 1,000 security guards dressed in civilian clothes, in addition to 2,000 uniformed police officers, Színes Bulvár lap reports. This "1st degree protection" (1-es fokozatú védelem) has not been granted to any visiting dignitary in the past decade, not even Vladimir Putin, who you'd think would be in need of just as much protection or more. Oh, crap - sorry.
While in Budapest Bush will ride around in a Cadillac DTS limousine specially flown in for the trip. The rocket-proof vehicle is fitted with tear gas grenades and contains three pouches of donor blood that matches the president's blood type. He's also brought a big shiny helicopter. Wait, was adding "big shiny" editorializing? Hard to tell!
