Another example of how Corporate America isn't any better
I always laugh at folks that are pro privatization because they feel that corporations are better able to manage money/time..etc

Well I work for a large company that decided to move to a new location to save money. The people put in charge of the move were all inept and chosen for this move based on their "chipperness" and ability to butt-kiss. However they are all pretty much lazy imbeciles.

So far...what has gone wrong.

1. 40 people in the past two weeks have been non-productive because of "move mentality" and also because the office move was handled poorly. These folks are high paid developer types...so this is a lot of money and time down the drain.

2. The move was handled in such a "secret" way that some people didn't even know where the new location would be and had to map it out on the internet before going to work. The "secrecy" was justified by babbling like..."we can't have everyone up there..it would get out of hand"...

3. Those people who actually deal with customers..were left out of the move process and found that they are unable to work in the new location because things like "electricity" are not available to them...

4. Loads of people are so mad because of the way they were treated and how this was handled that it is creating a very nasty environment in which to work.

the list could go on but it just raises my blood pressure....now meanwhile we have customers to serve and take care of ....but no one was worried about making money or doing their jobs..they preferred to be petty, clic-ish and ignorant.

So...when George Bush told people he wanted to apply business theory to government...i think this is the kind of "theory" he was applying and could explain the FEMA f-up in NOLA.

1. I could not agree more
I have seen just as much waste and corruption in private business as in government, so I think that old saw needs to be retired.

When one company I used to work for decided to "tighten their belt" they repaved the entire parking lot and increased spending in many areas so that their budgets would line up and so they could write off expenses.

2. I am a corporate consultant
specifically, I do telecom management consulting. I do a fair amount of move coordination, and sometimes get put in charge of other aspects of the move simply by default. I can't tell you how many "project managers" and "move coordinators" I've seen who are innept at everything except kissing ass.

Yes, you need to plan for growth in your electrical needs. And yes you have to ask everyone for an inventory of all their electrical devices and appliances are so you can get an accurate estimate.

Yes, you will need to include air conditioners in that estimate, even if they won't be on all the time. This is especially true for the air conditioners in your server room.

Yes, you may want to take this opportunity to pull out the former tenant's old cables and put in new cabling. It's going to cost you far more to do it later.

Yes, you need to leave the ceiling open so we can pull cables, and yes, you need to let us put boxes and jacks in the walls before you have the painters come in. And yes, you need to schedule some time for us to do all of this, you damned idiot. Faeries don't come in and do the cabling overnight.

Yes, you need to run more jacks to each workstation than they're using at this moment. Plan for people to be using more devices in the future, not less.

Geez, how do these morons get these jobs?

4. office moves
As a retired electrician, I can second your thoughts. I can't count how many time the electricians get screwed by these goofy moves.

6. Electricians and Cabling guys get screwed
in almost every move plan I've ever seen. It's the first place people try to save money and condense the schedule.

5. I just shake my head...
luckily I can work from home...which I am.

I told my boss that I won't return until the situation is resolved, the conditions of my office space and the office itself are so deplorable that I won't go back until someone calls me personally and tells me everything is okay.
