I would love to see a progressive in the west wing, but I doubt it will happen. I'm just on a nice buzz (lots of good political stuff happening locally, just got to see dan bern and pete seeger at www.clearwater.org music fest, might have a political consulting job--- part time, got to see the Prairie Home Companion movie and Gore's movie... things are going real good for me right now) and tried to capture this feeling in the OP.

48. Wes Clark. He gets it, and he always stresses the environment
Check out Clark's talk at the yearly kos science panel:
http://www.securingamerica.com/node/1101

Check out this excellent series on global warming that Clark is sponsering on his web site (really is worth reading and passing on to others):
http://securingamerica.com/ccn/realscience

Check out Clark's podcasts on the subject of Global Warming, there are three. I can't find the direct link to those "clarkcasts" directly, but you can download the full list of all of the podcasts he did (there's something like a dozen or more) by using this link:
http://www.securingamerica.com/taxonomy/term/22

Check out Clark's participation in StopGlobalWarming.com, he has mobilized more support there than has anyone else in politics:
http://www.stopglobalwarming.org/sgw_marcher.asp?2724

Check out Clark's 2004 Platform on the environment here:

I heard Gore give a speech, it was on Sirius "Talk Left" a number of months ago, and IF and that's a big IF, he could come across like he did in that speech....EVERYBODY would vote for him. He had me to tears and my patriotism was giving me goosebumps....trust me, that rarely happens anymore.

28. I hate to point out the obvious but Gore already won under incredible odds
He started his 2000 campaign one month after the impeachment attempt against Clinton, and was 20 points behind. Bush outspent him by around 2 to 1; the NRA and other right wing groups spent millions to sway the vote in swing states. The legal loophole that made 527s (MoveOn, etc.) possible had not been passed yet, and the Netroots had not come into being. The Dem party was divided (at best); since the CW was that Gore was going to loose by a landslide, there were far too many beltway insiders who were more focused on who was going to run the Democratic Party after Gore lost than trying to win the 2000 campaign. The media was historically hostile to Gore. And worst of all the voters were in a mood similar to the mood of the late 1920s - - they (we) were focused on the material, bored by politics and naively convinced that the President of the United States was a position without any real power.

By the time of the Dem convention, Gore had cut Bush's lead in half, down to ten points.

At the end, Gore got 1/2 million more votes than Bush. He got more votes than any Presidential candidate before him, except for Reagan' in 1984.

He's very electable, and he's proven it, unlike any of the other potential 2008 candidates.

34. yes gore won
no one really disputes this, the problem isn't who is or who is not electable -- gore was, hillary is, the problem is that the fix is in and no one wants to be the man who started a civil war to fix it, certainly gore didn't want to be that man

we are arranging deck chairs on the titanic in my humble opinion when we sit debating hillary versus gore

we need to get w. the big picture

I want an envirmentalist as well. I just don't want a radical one. The radicals don't speak my kind of envrimentalism.. just like the radical christians don't speak my form of christianity.

43. You mean
The guy that said there wasn't any difference between Gore and Bush? LOL! Yea, I doubt you will get Gore to run on that platform.

After watching the documentry and seeing Gore's passion for this and what he has honestly tried to do.... Can you really understand how Nader's comments really cut deeply.

I'm not talking about Gore's campaign here. I'm talking about Gore personaly. That had got to have hurt! I know I was!

But back to the topic. I'm going to be honest with you about this. I've already said how I personaly believe about extreamists. They are the same on both sides and I don't like them talking for me. This next point is sorta a different issue.

There are a few that have had some personal suprises that have come from the extream envirmental movement. Nothing that really makes natioanl media attention. Hence, the suprise. People whoe ARE envirmentalist themselfs, who live.. say.. next to major forests.. wanting to know why the govenment isn't taking care of 'fire hazzords', etc. THey get the major suprise that some of the groups that they have been funding has been going to court, tying the government hands, preventing fire hazzords from being taken care of. Actualy, doesn't see a problem if a a fire does happen. Because to 'them' the only way it should be removed, should be naturaly. Which means by FIRE. The fact that their house might get burned, not an imporant issue. And that it goes along wiht some extreamist groups that consider the removal of the home and possible loss of human life also quite acceptable.. cause there are to many humans in the world anyway.

To put it bluntly, people are waking up to the dangors of extreamists. Just because a group claims to be an envirmentalist, doesn't mean they are a 'logical' envirmentalist.

For these people who have had to deal with the effects of these extreamist, they become just as heated over the subject, as those who have been extreamly harrassed by extreamist Christians.. when the word CHRISTAN is even mentioned.

That makes it HARDER for us to FIGHT for the ENVIRMENT!

It makes it HARDER for us to get ELECTED persons who understands.. much less have an actual passion for envirmental causes!

Which brings up a reminder of what exactly IS our GOAL as envirmentalists? That is something that we seriously need to think about.

I don't hate the extreamist with a passion. I actualy think we need extreamists of alsorts. They point out things that everyone messes. And they monitor their 'passion' closely. WE NEED THOSE KINDS OF SAFE GAURDS. But not to rule. Cause an extreamist in anything, can't see past their 'passion.' Kinda one sided, when there are so many other sides to consider.

So, that is a real problem that we have. The word 'envirmentalist' is getting to be a 'red flag' along the lines of 'radical christian' is. Unless we START making the verbal difference and start ading 'radical' in front of envirmentalist, so thatthere is a line. So people don't run from the 'label.' We don't need it to become a dirty word.

And it IS in some places. For the past several years people have been dealing with fires that could hae been prevented if people were allowed to do their job. This is important. Cause after the fires, local people start asking questions. When they find out about the law suites, etc.. created by the exreamist... They don't forget quickly. come the next election and one of the canidates is considered an 'envirmentalist'.. do you really think they are going to vote for that person?

Now you have an 'electiblity' issue. The canidate is now hampared by the 'envirmentalist' label.

I'm sorry. What was our goal again? Oh yea, getting envirmentalist elected.

If we want to get any sort of envirmentalist elected, we have GOT to make that verbal difference from envirmenalist and extream envirmentalist. Or NOW envirmentalist will be able to get elected. Not your sort and not my sort.

When are the valued members of DU going to concentrate on winning back a branch of the Congress rather than piss away effort on 2008? We ain't going to accomplish Jack Squat if we don't control the House or Senate.

The Harry and Nancy show is totally ineffective and can't even put out a strategy that includes feeding the dog and putting the cat out, and your playing pick 'em like a sports caller on fantasy trades/

20. allow me to retort

I'm working hard for the 2006 mid-term dems, especially Maurice Hinchey and John Hall. Plus, in NYS, we are looking to pick up a couple NYS Senate seats and many, many Assembly seats. Plus Spitzer is gonna be our next Governor, and Hillary Clinton will be re-elected.:patriot:

Then in 2007, We have our city and town races. Then 2008 we have the white house.

18. I'm carrying petitions for Hinchey and John Hall right now
(well not at this minute, tomorrow) and working for many local candidates for NYS Assembly this year. I'm gonna try to make them all inconvenient candidates. What have you been up to buddy?

Hey, we're Dems. We're allowed to differ and err.
Otherwise, we'd be Rep.... oh hell I can't even type it.

49. I did go see it and I also urge all others to do so also
I responded to you above about another Democrat who really get this, but I forgot to agree with you about how important a film this is to have as many people see as possible. Gore did a wonderful job, and Thank God he made it.

51. Heard It From The Experts Myself
While I take Mr. Gore at his word, I decided to attend two of the last major intercontinental symposia on global warming, the Solar World Congress 2005 and Solar Cities Congress 2006. There, I heard from captains of the alternative energy industry, academicians, scientists and bureaucrats on the subject of global warming. Suffice it to say, I drew the same conclusions as Mr. Gore three full months before seeing his superb film.

We need to get with it, people!

Good movie though. I'll vote for Al Gore again if he decides to run.
