Was Stalin right?
When he said, "The death of one man is a tragedy. The death of millions is a statistic."

How different it is, for example, to read "10 killed in ongoing violence in Baghdad", http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060616/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq_060616130334

and "Mohammad Ali Khuder, student, killed by gunfire." (A name I picked at random from the Iraq Body Count page http://www.iraqbodycount.net/database/}

Who was Mohammad Ali Khuder, student? How old was he? Did his family grieve? His friends? Was he in love with a fellow student? What did he aspire to? Was he lighthearted? Or, quiet and studious?

It doesn't say who shot him or why. And, to me, it doesn't really matter. The madness continues and the monsters who started the slaughter and continue it worry not about a kid named "Mohammad Ali Khuder, student".

“What difference does it make to the dead, the orphans and the homeless, whether the mad destruction is wrought under the name of totalitarianism or the holy name of liberty or democracy.” - Gandhi

5. Stalin was not a genius. Not even close. Try reading some of the
garbage he wrote.

19. Yes. You were replying to reply #1 which is true. Stalin is estimated
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 06:44 PM by lindisfarne
to be responsible for at least 20 million deaths through his internal (USSR)policies. Another 20 million citizens of the USSR died in WWII, in part because of Stalin's refusal to prepare for war. Putting him in league with Hitler.

Part of the reason Stalin refused to prepare for war was due to a secret agreement signed with Hitler (http://www.answers.com/topic/molotov-ribbentrop-pact ). Also putting him in league with Hitler.
("in league with" can also mean "on a par with", in case semantics is the issue).

7. NPR occasionally does...
A few months ago I remember hearing an interview where a woman was talking about how it seemed like the earth was closing in on them... then more recently Indymedia published something she had written.

A truth we definitely don't want to look at....causes squirming....

Not to mention the apathy of liberals concerning some issues. Much more squirming....

12. I thought it was
"Kill one man you are a Murderer, kill a hundred a Hero, kill a million a Conquerer, kill everyone a God." but my friend google says it was Jean Rostand (d.1977), French biologist and philosopher.

But, you hit a good point numbers 2500, 10, 1643, 3, 38514 are just that two or three digits, they mean nothing, no one attaches much of anything to numbers. But, a story of Mohammad Ali Khuder hits so much harder which is why it is not reported.

And just flashing SSgt Jay T. Collado, father and husband means something to few, but when you've spoken to the man and know alittle about him it means something else...

13. How different is it from Tony Snow saying 2,500 dead US troops
are "just a number"? Answer, no difference. Both parties HATE the people who slave away at 'prosperity'. It reminds them that some people actually WORK for a living! Guilt turns into hate.
