Study: Blacks Hear Better Than Whites

ATLANTA -- A government study says black adults hear better than white adults.

The study also found that women hear better than men, and that overall, hearing in the United States is about the same as it was 35 years ago. That's despite the advent of ear-blasting devices such as the Walkman and the iPod.

Previous research reached similar findings about racial and sex differences. But experts say the new study is the largest national sample to report such a finding.

The racial difference may be related to melanin, a skin pigment.

A researcher said some scientists believe black people's larger amounts of melanin protect them from noise-induced hearing loss as the years go by.

1. Yes, I'd say it was a matter of "listening" rather than hearing - I've

read that "outgroups" (anyone other than white males, essentially) pick up on various cultural clues, and generally notice more of what's going on around them. It can work the other way, too. If you find yourself a minority in a group (a man among women, or white among African Americans) your observational powers are suddenly increased.

Black's ability to recognize bullshit, lies, and other forms of deceit has been tuned to a state of perfection by centuries of discrimination and oppression.

Interesting considering in general, those groups tend to be treated poorly by society. I wonder if it is a social status biological change. You know, like the fish who grow larger when their rival dies off or grow smaller when in a lower status. The melanin theory can't be true since women do not tend to have more melanin than men. It is an advantage to hear everything being said, especially if you have to protect yourself from abuse.
