Are you emotionally prepared to lose this November?
How will you react if we lose again this November? I know we are supposed to be optimistic, but I'm not.

I hope we win, I really do, but if we don't, what will you do? How will you react?

1. Oh, I'm ready
Edited on Fri Jun-16-06 06:39 AM by Gman
I expect the Dems to make some small gains, but not take over Congress. That's too much considering the gerrymandering of the past few years. I have very low expectations so I will not be disappointed. If the Dems would have taken CA-50 I might have reason to get excited. But not now.

There is NO good reason to not support getting the privitization of our votes brought to a PERMANENT END.
I will not vote for ANYONE who does not plan to do something about it, democrat or not.

42. what's that term I saw recently -
Concern Troll

for example,

'Rove is on the loose, elections are all rigged anyway, democrats don't have any spine, we can't trust any media sources, oh my we don't have a chance, do we? help me out here!"

when challenged or questioned, "Aw now why you getting all hostile on me, I just wanna help. And what about freedom of speech"

a form of divisiveness, then the passive aggressive response(well go ahead and alert me/get me banned).

your right when you say 'the nature of being provacative'

tiresome

... better to be pessimistic and pleasantly surprised than optimistic and dissapointed.

The Republicans continue to have so much more game than the Dems running (with a few exceptions) I realize that my optimism of a couple weeks ago was misplaced. Dem politicians are sitting on their hands trying to run out the clock - that is not how you win.

The only bright spot I see is Dean's strategy, which will eventually pay off - but won't deliver November.

And finally, the evoting problem is STILL not getting enough attention. Ever wonder why Bush continues to bolster the power of the executive with his polling in the basement? Its because he's not worried about a Dem president coming in 2008 and getting those powers. He's not worried because they've got the whole thing wired.

I suppose I will do what I did after Bush got in the 2nd time. close down..turn off the tv and the computer for a couple of months...sulk like a teenager with a broken heart. Then I hope gather enough strength to come back and fight some more. At least that is what I hope will happen but I have to admit even at this point I am starting to burn out...We have to fight for every little thing now. The Net, our phones, Medical, SS, schools, on and on

Am I imagining things? or has it been worse than I ever remember it being. There are just to many fronts in this war...I truly feel like its almost a civil war..we are just not shooting at each other.

12. The Democratic party has shot themselves in the foot.
By ignoring the rigged elections and not doing something early and regularly to control the widespread voting "glitches" they have allowed the repukes an easy route. By ignoring the blatant discrimination in district configurations they have handed the repukes a tool. By taking the side of the illegal over the US citizen (immigrants too) they have have provided cover for the repukes. I dearly hope I'm wrong, but the gains we have made in public opinion are nothing compared to the tools waiting for the repukes to use.

"DU is not for doom talkers and agents provocateur" Have you ever visted the Activist's Forum on DU, it's probably one of the least frequented on the board. DU is filled with doomsayers and people filled with despair who aren't doing anything but talking about it. Everytime I participated in an antiwar rally and came back "home" to DU, I was greeted with negativity and people bashing my efforts. A few weeks ago there was a rally to support Darfur, there was thread open just to support the efforts and there were a total of ten posters that even bothered to post. I don't fault anyone for feeling turned off by the political process in this country but to say that DU's purpose is for activism, absolutely gives the posters on this forum way too much credit.

30. No, I think all opinions are needed for
a valid discussion. Its just that a number of your statements are declarative and not seemingly framed as 'your personal opinion', 'your personal fear'.

IMO, to worry now takes energy we could better use to work for a candidate, to work for change, to promote alternative thinking, to promote the truth as we see it. Otherwise, if I were to take your stance that it was hopeless, I would find a few good books to lose myself in for the duration. Trust me, I understand the despair - but we really have no time for despair or we will fail most certainly.

You need some endorphins, my friend. Go out and find something you can do today to effect positive change in your immediate environment. Don't stop fighting now. Too much is riding on our continuing to confront the injustices happening daily. Giving up is a victory for the Neocons.

Peace.

I do talk about it but know that when I do, it has a tendency to increase exponentially - especially when I talk with others who are feeling down too. And I was serious about the endorphins - find something to laugh about - DUCK SOUP would be a good remedy maybe??!! or find something to do that effects someone or something in a positive way.

We need everyone - including those who are doubtful - to be successful to putting the country back on track.

19. The Democrats can win
They'll win if they disavow the Iraq war and frame it as the GOP's mess to clean up, as long as they're in power.

The Democrats can win if they champion campaign finance reform, getting the dirty money out of the campaigns.

The Democrats WILL win if they come up with a plan to wean us off oil. An apollo-scale program that would create jobs, clean up the environment, lower our dependence on the middle east, and defund the countries that are currently supporting terrorism.

IOW, it's already clear the Democrats won't win.

I won't be let down unless the Democrats find their voice, and lose in Diebold states anyway.

28. Hasn't ANYONE here played serious "normal" organized sports?
All sortsa questions along these lines - and they all seem bizarre to me.

How to react upon losing? Be bummed out for a few days, take a look back and see what both teams did that worked, what my team did that didn't, and what can be improved in the future. And start looking at issues and getting ready for the next match-up.

It's weird to me to think there's anything else substantially different that a person might do.

But then I gotta remember I'm on DU here, full of soul-searchers and navel-gazers, and other deep-thinkers, who are concerned on a daily basis that "great America experiement" has failed, and that it's time to cower and whimper away to Canada/Europe, and the like.

Hasn't anyone played non-fringe, American, organized team sports? Like football, basketball, baseball, hockey, track, wrestling?

The "how do you deal with the prospect of losing" is a problem that generically speaking has been solved often in the sports world. Maybe I've spent too much time there, and have lost track that the rest of the world hasn't been as exposed to that particular problem as sportsy-folks.

84. RIGHT, big difference!...
"organized sports are played by the rules" and there is also a quality of TRANSPARENCY to the game. You might not agree with the umpire, but at least you saw the play and can judge for yourself.

American elections are NOT played by the rules and key plays are NOT seen.

The sports analogy is so bogus as to be laughable. There is much greater depression and feeling of powerlessness when the game is rigged, than when the game is won "fair and square."

We are being asked to believe in a dysfunctional election system. Blows the mind. Turns the stomach.

This election 2006 I think will give us much new information about what is really going on...because more people are waking up to it and working on it. Every one of us who cares should find out what is really going on in our local communities re. election issues. This is something we can fight at the
local and state level.

55. organized sports??
When one team loses or wins, it is of no consequence to the vast majority of people. It certainly is of no consequence to how this country is run and who gets screwed and how much more messed up we are going to be before we find a way to turn it all around.

So be bummed for a few days and get over it? Like a sports team? This is no game we are playing with our lives and really the lives of people all around the world. I fight every day not to continually be depressed. I work locally so that I can keep from falling into deep depression. One thing I will not do is just get over it and say better luck next time.

But if the problem is rigged elections then perhaps no.

41. I have been pessimistic for a long time
In 00 and 04 and now in 06
And I can remember discussing te election of 00 and telling the other side that bush would win by hook or by crook. And boy was that prophecy accurate.
My argument was that Bill Clinton was a mistake the neo cons would not make again. Papa bush was suppose to be elected to finish his work and Clinton messed up there time table. And while Clinton was a go along guy he was not in the loop of the military industrial complex and would not do all that he should.
So in 00 the rethugs had a country wide plan to steel it and they just repeated it in 04,
My prediction for 06 is a slight advance for Demos but no control over ether house
And for 08 McCain is scheduled to be the winner because he will bring back the Reagan Democrats to the fold.
But what will I do about it? Noting much different than I have been doing, just pointing out what I see. But it will take more than that to get this country back to a democracy that works

49. Always prepared for any eventuality
I've been involved in politics long enough to know that you don't always win or get what you hope for. I believe that things have happened in the voting process that is giving an advantage to a certain party, but I'm not going to believe that it is on every level all the way down to the local dog catcher.

Before the internet you took the loss with some grievance, but you were more alone than you are these days because you have hundreds in not thousands of people that you interact with all the time. When we suffer a loss, it seems to hit home harder because we discuss these things daily here and we all react at the same time and the passion is high. It's not like before the internet when I would just throw a shoe at the TV and then go to work and got on with it.

I can always tell who here is fairly new to the political process because they come on here after a big loss and say their life is ruined and they are going to give up all hope. The people who have been more involved and understand the process better might bitch for a few days, but then you see them start talking about next time and what we can do.

So yeah, I'm prepared for some loss, but I am also prepared for some wins. So c'mon.... let's do this people

Your many negative posts have you opposite effect on me than you intend. They just make me want to work harder for the Democratic party.

IF you really want the Democrats to win, then channel your negativism into working for a candidate or two. It would do wonders for your thought processes to actively engage your brain in something worthwhile.

I am now going to double the time I am spending volunteering for the Casey campaign. Thanks again!

58. Vote Is Fixed Anyway
It is not a matter of IF we win, it is WHEN we lose because the voting mechanisms are fixed. Whether it is disenfranchising voters, fixing machines so they tally something completely different than what is wanted, or outright intimidation, we are facing a voting crisis. I am an IT person, I have spent time with voter watch people who worked on this issue and I can tell you it WILL be fixed especially in sensitive parts of the country.

This is not as hopeless as it seems, IMO. Exit pols do count and if the gap between what the machines say and what the pols said is too great it would discredit the machine. Also the best thing every progressive can do is to be vigilant, whether it is being an observer, registering voters (especially the low income and elderly), working on campaigns, financially supporting candidates, knocking on doors, everything counts. Election night, beat the so-called MSM to the punch by announcing the exit pols ~ not saying this is who won, but saying what was counted by pol. If we had an extensive group of pol watchers and vote count watchers in place, if anything it would expose the fraud. Be at City Hall, your state capitol in hoards the night of the election ready to demonstrate and refuse to move. One person cannot do this all by themselves, it takes thousands, perhaps even millions, but this is what they did in Eastern Europe and it worked ~ even with cheating politicians who thought they had it in the bag.

If we are serious about this next elections we HAVE to care enough to have our boots on the ground!

My 2 cents

86. Participate In Exit Pols Or...
...show up for pol watch (MoveOn will most likely have a place to sign up, as will other places), help organize and participate in a sit down type demonstrations at your local elections board, or state capitol, or city hall demanding recounts, there are lots of things you can do ~ and if anyone calls you a moon bat, so be it...most new movements are considered radical until others get the message and join in.

The reason why exit pols are so important is that if the gap between the exit pols and the machine count is too big, they can TRY to shrug it off, but it is a tried and true method of making sure the ballot box is not stuffed...all over the world. You can use it to request recounts, create interest in what is going on, as well as other things. If you thank your district is particularly at risk, request it be monitored and monitor it yourself, recording the discrepancies.

The other thing the E Europeans did was begin a campaign by making stencils, for instance, and spraying messages on sidewalks, doorways and other public places. They chose the color orange to indicate who they were, wearing and using that color for messages in a single color can be a silent message as to who you are...I heard the suggestion for instance, that we use the color purple (red and blue) to indicate our vigilance to make sure the vote is fairly done, because red and blue is for BOTH Republicans and Dems.

That is just a few things you can do to help make sure the vote is counted properly. Even wingnuts cannot say you are somehow "wrong" for your dedication to the voting pols and making sure everything is going right.

You may have to be the one who takes the initiative to organize some of these things, but this is what a true patriot would do ~ organize.

My 2 cents

69. All my life...
... I've heard about the "power of positive thinking". Well guess what - I don't buy it.

Happy talk is happy talk. The Republicans are great at it - "we've turned the corner in Iraq" and "the economy is going gangbusters" and on and on, and none of it is remotely true.

Positive thinking is fine, but realistic thinking is even better. As my Cherokee grandmother once said "wish in one hand and crap in the other, and see which one fills up first".

Anyone thinking we are definitely positively going to take back the house or the senate is a dreamer. We might. I certainly HOPE we do. But I'm also philosophical about it.

What was that prayer? "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference"

We can work and fight and all that, and I have IMMENSE respect for those who do. My contribution to the cause consists mostly of sending money here and there, because I'm not the kind of personality who can go door to door and talk to people, it just isn't in me.

But no matter how much we work and fight, it is up to the "Average American" to figure this stuff out. S/he eventually will, and one could make the argument that the worse things get before s/he does, the farther in the ditch the Republican party will remain for longer.

There is nothing I'd like to see more than some accountability for Bush and his band of merry fuckups, and the only way that is going to happen is if there is a big win for us in 2006. But I'm not getting my hopes up, because I just cannot handle another 2004.

I want it to be clear in the minds of everyone who's screwing up the country. I don't want there to be any doubt what so ever. I want them to collapse the way they did during the great depression so no one will vote for them for the next 50 years.

97. If The Dems Fail in November, Then Our True Enemy Will Be Revealed
The Democratic leadership. With Bush's poor poll numbers, an illegal war with no exit strategy, assaults on our civil liberties, a completely corrupted congress, an incompetent administration, and rigged elections, the Democrats should easily re-take the congress. There's no excuse for failure other than complete complacency on the part of the leadership.

It will then be time for an all out open warfare within the party. It'll be time to internally clean house. The fight changes from the Republicans to Dems like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi.

101. I'm not ready to lose again
We need the Democrats to strategize, play dirty, whatever it takes to win, otherwise, they won't be able to position the party for '08.

Bush has had some luck in the past few weeks politically but it won't hold. He is going to have to lie cheat and steal the election as never before. We have to stop them from doing that.

I would like to see the Democrats show that the mistakes made in Iraq and irresponsible spending is their focus. Tell that tale everywhere they can and to anyone who will listen. John Kerry made the comment that they just had to spend over $5 million in national GOP money to hold on to the California House seat vacated by Randy "Duke" Cunningham. That is $100 for every vote. There is no way they can continue at that pace.

They can also call attention to the divide in the party on amnesty. The Dems should corner them to where they have no choice but to take Bushie on the campaign trail. Everyone knows about that split and one or the other will have to lie about their position.

We should also be ready for the stupid challenges again at the voting booth. This time, let's challenge them.

Speaking of voting, the Diebold machines need to be looked at carefully by experts. They should be doing that soon. I agree that we can't let the Republicans control the voting machines as they have in the past.
