So will burning a flag be a fine, or will you be arrested?
I hear it may just become an amendment to the constitution this time, or at least be a close one.

Can you freakin' believe it? What shall the punishment be for burning a cloth symbol?

And what next will become a crime? Personally I don't run into a lot of flag burners in my daily routine, in fact, I don't think I've ever witnessed that particular soon to be crime.

I'll bet a rash of flag burning breaks out if it passes though. A lot of folks just hadn't thought of it till they brought it up.

1. Gosh, how will I afford the fines?
As a good liberal, I burn at least 200 or 300 flags before breakfast :eyes:

3. I burn them for a hobby too!
But your habit is worse than mine. I must strive to be more liberal and flammable.

5. The flag is a piece of cloth. The REASONS people burn the flag is what
needs to be addressed - frustration, fear, hatred - whatever. Changing people's hearts cannot be legislated. Republicans never ever seem to acknowledge this.

6. Isn't the proper way to dispose of an American flag (which
has become unusable) to burn it? I know there's a specific ceremony because I learned it years ago.

14. Yes, that is the proper way to dispose of a flag
I learned this is Girl Scouts along with other flag etiquette items.

You're supposed to burn an unusable flag. We even demonstrated at my girl scout leader's home using her fireplace and an old worn out, faded flag. We gathered round and she placed it in the fire and we all watched it burn.

So I suppose this would be a crime now if we can't burn flags.

If you don't have the means to burn a flag, the VFW will do it for you.

7. That depends if you are burning them...
...in protest outside of a GOP convention, or a Dem convention.

9. The American Legion burns flags
as do other patriotic groups. Not for a political statement, but as the proper way to dispose of a soiled or tattered flag. Will this also be outlawed? Does this mean that the proper disposal of the flag is a dumpster?

10. And does this only apply to full-size flags, made of heavy cloth,
that you would run up a flagpole, or does it also apply to the cheap little souvenir flags that Our Leader is so fond of autographing? I guess the Supreme Court will get to sort out all the details.

15. How about the flags on paper napkins?
that routinely get tossed in the BBQ pit when the BBQ is over?

Sigh.

20. Or young women who wear bikinis which appear to be made of a flag?
Surely they'll make an exception for that? You can't get more American than a beautiful girl wearing a flag.

12. Some more questions to add to it...
Will three strikes apply? If you burn a flag three times do you get life without parole? If so what if you burn three flags at once?

Will there be special federal prisons to incarcerate flag burners?

What is a flag? Are representations of flags, flags?

What about the size of a flag? Do those little 4th of July stick in the ground ones count?

All kidding aside, this really blows. It means we as a country do not practice what we preach to the rest of the world. It means we are really no better than most other places that we tend to look down our noses at.

It means we care only for freedom when it suits us, and most alarmingly, it is a sign we no longer have the confidence in freedom, or ourselves that we once had, but then, 9-11 showed that a whole lot of people are willing to cash in their confidence and their freedoms just to feel a little safer. Flag burning amendment? Pffft. One last straw to grasp at, as we descend into oblivion, becoming just another place that once has had its day.

Figuratively, that is. But first, we'll have to get rid of Bush's puppets in robes who disgrace the judicial bench.

19. If they are going to go to all of the trouble of passing a
Constitutional Amendment, I hope they add a clause that the stars and stripes is the only flag representing the USA and outlaw the displaying of the confederate flag. Even having it painted on your vehicle should be an act of treason.
