1. Don't these people realize
that Philly is a TOURIST town? They get people from all over the world.

This sign - designed to insult "immigrants" - not only does that, but threatens their tourist reputation world wide.

Ijits.

2. Why Blame Philadelphia
Why blame the whole city for the actions of one business owner?

This is a situation in which I believe we should let free market forces work.

3. http://www.gop.com/espanol/ - You know, the party of Speak English or
go live in some other country?

The same party that says the only way to be a True American is to learn the language.

Oh, the hypocrisy (damn, how many times a week do I think that one)

When it comes to immigration and the protection of American "culture," hard to always know what "DU this poll" means.

8. I don't blame Philadelphia. I blame the A-hole business owner who has
a lot of nerve puting that sign up considering his grandparents reportedly immigrated here from Italy and had a tough time learning English.

17. They learned what? The city is filing against the dumb ass who put up the
sign.

It's this guy and other restaurant owners who need to learn.

The city isn't mandating the English-only signs.

PHILADELPHIA - City officials are expected to file a complaint Monday against an English-only ordering policy at Geno’s Steaks, one of Philadelphia’s best-known cheesesteak joints that has entered the national immigration debate.

Situated in a South Philadelphia immigrant neighborhood, Geno’s has posted small signs telling customers, “This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING ‘SPEAK ENGLISH.’”

“We’re alleging that the sign itself is enough of an unwelcoming message that it may violate the Fair Practices Act,” Rachel Lawton, acting executive director of the Philadelphia Commission on Human Relations, told the Philadelphia Inquirer.

35. Sorry I misunderstood but one thing I have learned is most of us here at
DU enjoy speaking in complete sentences.

Not only is it more engaging, but it helps avoid misunderstandings.

I've even been told the dumbest of dumb Freepers speak in complete sentences on their horrible site.

No offense, of course.

9. If we're going to start putting signs in windows demanding English
be spoke among the inhabitants... than shouldn't we start with the oval office? For a New England Blue-Blood/ Born-again Texas Red-neck you'd think that English would be Bush's native Language and not sound like it's his second.

I'm not going to Philly, and I hope Philly's attitude isn't catching in the next county.

I'll bring my American flag just in case. I hear crime is up in PA. Best to have the flag for protection. I've been so anxious to wave it for the longest time, hoping to be a part of the patriotic fever that's taken hold in America, and what better place than Anywhere, PA US of A?

speak English, for that matter.

"Youns goanto da Stillers game?"

The city in question was Philly, though. They don't understand me, either, when I go there. My flat Midwestern accent makes them stop in their tracks. "Yo, Looie, waddit dat guy jus say?"

People who don't speak English or who are offended won't patronize the restaurant. His foreign tourist clientele will certainly drop off.

Guy sounds like a jerk. The food probably sucks too.

question is framed. I don't think it's a bad reflection on Philly as a whole, just the idiot who posted the sign and others who praise the sign.
But this poll doesn't ask the right question.

31. The poll isn't really asking the right question
Asking whether the sign reflects poorly on the city isn't really asking whether or not people agree with the sentiment. I think it reflects poorly on the guy who put up the sign, not the city. I voted yes anyway because I think they were really trying to measure public sentiment about the message of the sign, but the question is really worded in a pretty stupid way.

people in a crash reflects poorly on the city.

It reflects poorly on the idiot drunk driver.

41. It definitely DOES reflect badly on Philadelphia,
if you think America should be a tolerant, welcoming place.

If you think everyone in America should fall in line and act a certain prescribed way, then you probably agree with the sign.

I'd bet anything that 99.9% of all immigrants WANT to learn fluent English. They are here to make a living, and the worse your English is, the less money you can probably make. Maybe there is the rare antisocial person who doesn't care to learn the dominant language, but that is not the norm. Just remember if you have ever travelled to a country where YOU didn't speak the language (if you have been so fortunate to travel). I can tell you that being unable to converse fluently can be a pain in the ass, and it's not something anyone normal would cling to.

Oh, and Philadelphia has spent millions of dollars to advertise their city as a good vacation spot for gays. The city leaders WANT to be known as a tolerant welcoming place. What if that a-hole from Genos put up a sign that said NO QUEERS ALLOWED, STRAIGHT PEOPLE ONLY?

Maybe a WHITES ONLY sign?
